Day 55 - Your Inner Circle

📝 Reflection

 1 Kings 1:27

“…Has my lord the king really done this without letting any of his officials know who should be the next king?”

So after many years of ruling as king we find David in his old age in 1 Kings. He has many children and they are all grown up now and one of them in particular, Adonijah, has decided he will be the next king. He is not shy about it either. But David in is old age and seems is nearly bed ridden and not aware of this. Nathan, his prophet and trusted advisor learns of this and knows this is not what David would want and what God had planned either. He knows and remembers that David had pledged to Bathsheba that Solomon would be his successor as King.

Knowing David as well as he does and being one of his trusted advisors he devises a plan he knows that David will listen to and take action on. Just as we see that he did when David sinned against God by having Uriah the Hittite killed after having an affair with Bathsheba. He knows David better than he knows himself, he knows that David trusts him, he knows how to get David’s attention and how to get David to make the right decision for his own integrity, his kingdom, the greater good and of course for God.  So we have a full circle moment here with Bathsheba, David and Nathan, where God brings good out of what seemed like a not good situation years before.

Nathan remembered that many years prior that David had already made a vow to Bathsheba that Solomon would be the next King. But Nathan knows that David does not always respond well to a direct message from him, so he has Bathsheba go to him and remind him of this vow, and then he comes in near the end of the conversation pretending to be unaware of what Bathsheba is discussing with him. Nathan then proceeds to ask if David had decided to make Adonijah the next king, because he has just learned of the celebration that is taking place and Adonijah and some of David’s other leaders are already proclaiming that Adonijah will be the next King.

David of course is appalled that all of this is taking place without anyone consulting him and apparently taking advantage of his old age and perceived state of mind. He brings Bathsheba back in and restates his earlier vow from years past that “As surely as the Lord lives, who has rescued me form every danger, your son Solomon will the next king and will sit on my throne this very day, just as I voided to you before the Lord, the God of Israel.” (1 Kings1:29-30)

We all need a Nathan in our lives don’t we?  It should also be a worthy goal to be a Nathan for someone else! Someone who will remind us who we really are, the bigger picture, the greater good even when it is not easy. They know us so well that they know how to speak to us so that we will see clearly and be reminded of our own desired outcomes even when we get off track, when life circumstances are not easy and when there may be others we may also be listening too that don’t have our best interests at heart. Are you this trusted advisor for someone else?

If you have never really thought about what it means to have a trusted inner circle or to be a part of one. It might be a good idea to start now, it is never too late, and God is always right on time! It is often said that you are the average of the the five closest people to you - are you leveling up, are you being leveled up are you helping others to level up?  Sometimes we think it is just nice to be liked, and it definitely is. It is safe, comfortable and feels so good to our egos to be liked.  But I have come to learn and know that it is way better to be valued. Adding value sometimes means you have to challenge others even when they don’t like it, when it is done from a place of love and wanting the best for that person. Like Nathan we also have to know our audience and be wise in our approach, coming at someone with a wagging finger is not the best way to get results. We have to speak in ways that they will understand, listen and also come to the right conclusion on their own. (Nathan would have made a great coach😜).

Just being honest and transparent, I am not so sure I have always been that person for others in the past. I have always been well liked because I am just so darn ‘nice’. But I am not always sure I was on a short list of some and seen as being a valued and trusted advisor and part of their inner circle. Again, the truth sometimes hurts, but it can lead to very beautiful places when you are willing to own it and change it! Although I still have a long way to go, I have done a lot of this work and I now have a very trusted inner circle and I am also part of others inner circles and that is worth 1000x the price of admission by doing the work!
