📝 Reflection
Deuteronomy 30: 19-20
“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
One of my favorite movies is The Princess Bride, we should watch it together sometime, you can listen to me quote the whole thing 🤣. Anyway, a quote came to my mind immediately as I was reading the above passage in Deuteronomy. Inigo and Fezzik are trying to revive the almost dead Westley and they need to bring him up to speed and Inigo says to Westley “Let me explain. No there is too much. Let me sum up.” That is basically what Moses is doing here. He is summing up his whole message of the book of Deuteronomy - after giving all the gory details of the curses that will come if they choose the way that leads to death or by loving and obeying God all the blessing they would receive by choosing the way of life. AND that these choices effect not only them but also their descendants.
This is the short sighted mistake that we make often times. We justify and rationa’lie’ze , ‘it is my life, I can do what I want, this thing I am consuming or doing is only affecting my life and my health, I am not hurting anyone else…”. WRONG. Even in our stubbornness and hard headedness of thinking ‘what’s the big deal?”, don’t be fooled we are always making a choice that leads to more life or towards death. Moment by moment, day by day etc..
We try to over complicate, over think, procrastinate, delay, deny, blah blah.. but at the end of the day it is pretty simple and it is your choice and my choice, life or death. Now this can be taken quite literally and also metaphorically. First we have to understand what it means to be fully alive and what a life of ‘death’ looks like. I think we have all had bad days, but when bad days turn into a way of life, or when maybe things aren’t so bad, but you get in a ‘rut’ of sameness and stagnation. So we may be literally alive, but ‘feel dead’ inside.
To me, when I look back to just a few years ago - on the surface one might of looked at my life from the outside and said - ‘wow- she is so blessed and is doing lots of great things’. This was not wrong, but it also wasn’t the full truth, on the inside I was ‘dying’. I was overwhelmed and exhausted from the disease to please and I was justifying my use of such coping mechanisms like indulging and relaxing with a glass or three of wine and delicious food in the evenings. I was doing this while role modeling and teaching my teenagers that this is what adults do and how we handle our stress. I was day by day and seemingly small choice by small choice choosing death and teaching my kids the same thing. Literally because wine is a toxic substance and also metaphorically, by trying to deal with life by checking out of it. Wine also literally causes hangovers- which simply means something that remains from what is past. But when we look at the definition of hangover which basically is another way of saying there is a consequence - all choices have hangovers and consequences it is a law of nature.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
So when we strip it down to this level of simplicity, do you want life giving hangovers or those that lead to death - it really can be this simple. Do you choose life or death? Anything that distracts you or gets you off track from loving God and obeying God’s ways leads to death…eventually literally and metaphorically and not just for you but for your loved ones.
