📝 Reflection
Exodus 23: 20-32 (you can read on your own) Conquest of Canaan Promised
Exodus 23:29-30
“But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals would multipolar and threaten you. I will drive them out a little at a time until your populations has increases enough to take possession of the land.
I started reading Joshua this morning and this is the beginning of the Israelites finally getting to go into the promised land. This brought me back to when I was reading Exodus 23 and the foretelling of the promised land and the entry into it. When I was reading the verses in the story of the promises land I struck that what was also meant is that we are the promised land - our heart. He wants all of it - that is the promise, freely giving territory by territory. When the conquest is described, He is very specific to say that the land will not be given all at once. In fact He does ‘give’ it at all the Israelites are required to be actively engaged in battle of taking the territory.
Doesn’t our faith journey mirror this? We have to ‘give’ up strong holds in our life and it is a battle that we have to actively engage as God wants to enter into and take over our minds, hearts and souls - our being’ness’. We have to leave our slavery, we spend time in the wilderness desiring to move toward God and God move toward us, but we can’t quite make it. It is a mess and a place of in between and confusion. And finally our heart’s start to ‘get’ it. And little by little territory by territory He move in.
Our journey of changing anything in our lives can also mirror this. We wake up to the fact that we are ‘enslaved’ by something or ourselves in a habit (like 🍷). We want to move away from this habit over to a place where we are truly free and different, it doesn’t even take up space in our brains or heart any more. The desire is gone, but it was a battle and ground had to be taken step by step, battle by battle and the ‘enemy’ driven out completely! Before the battles can fully be engaged in and won, there is a place of confusion and wilderness a process of deciding and committing and moving toward and getting ready for battle.
This might be where you are now, knowing a change needs to happen but not sure what that really means or what life will be like, but you are willing to be in the wilderness and move in that direction. Or you might be on the other side, but engaged in battles and starting to take territory, but not fully in the promised land of freedom from your former way to being. In the passages I reference and what struck me personally is that there is no room for ‘serving 2 masters’ you can’t negotiate or commit partially (cognitive dissonance).
In order for the people to move into the land they had to annihilate what was there before, a complete reckoning has to take place in order for the new land to be established with God as the ruler. But it had to also happen in stages and phases. This gives me hope and reassures me that I can make fundamental changes to who I am and how I live, but I don’t have to do it all at once, in fact it is better not too!
Exodus 23:29-30 “But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals would multipolar and threaten you. I will drive them out a little at a time until your populations has increases enough to take possession of the land.
