📝 Reflection

Matthew 13: 3-9

He (Jesus) told many stores in the form of parables, such as this one: “Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. As he scattered them across his field, some sees fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn't’ have deep roots, they died. Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

In verses 18-23 Jesus goes on to explain this particular parable. At the end of the explanation in verse 23 he says “The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly heart and understand God’s word and produces a harvest of thirty, sixty or even a hundred times as much as had been planted.”  So basically we are dirt, we are either hard dirt, a rocks with a little bit of dirt on top, dirt but with lots of weeds and thorns growing already, or good fertile soil. Way back in Genesis, God created man out of dirt. So basically we are a little patch of dirt walking around that was given life and free will.

Our free will in conjunction with our mind and heart is the gardener of this little patch of earth. We are walking little gardens; are you a rock garden, a overgrown weed filled garden, a desert or are you taking care of your garden. Are you giving it all the nutrients it needs, are you providing regular care and watering? In chapter 12 vs. 33 Jesus states pretty clearly “A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, it’s fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad.”

Trees start is a good patch of soil, the seed is nurtured and is a product of the quality of the solid it was originally planted in.

Admittedly I am not a gardener, but a very quick google search turned up the following points about the importance of the soil for growth. Here are five reasons why soil is so important for trees:

    1. It provides a foundation
    2. Stores the necessary amount of water
    3. Hosts biodiversity
    4. Supports the roots in accessing nutrients and minerals
    5. Filters out the pollutants that may be harmful

So looking at this list and thinking of ourselves as soil where faith gets planted are you providing a strong foundation by knowing God personally and knowing His word for yourself, are you watering it properly with prayer and intercession of the Holy Spirit, are you a good host for the Holy Spirit and getting lots of exposure, experience and serving diverse people with diverse needs and personalities (aka are you sharing love), are you keeping yourself well nourished mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually, are you staying in relationship with Jesus, by staying in God’s word and presence personally on the regular so that you can filter out pollutants.

Now I know that everyone who comes across this is a ‘Christian’ and that is ok. Jesus gives many examples of God’s laws by observing and using nature as an example. We all have knowledge and the opportunity to know God and his ways provided through the example of nature itself. We are part of the natural world and therefore have to live by its laws and principles, for better or worse. We are each responsible for our own ‘patch of dirt’ if you are not having good fruit in your life you need to look within and in the mirror and check out how your have been tending to your ‘garden’.

Many of us give away our power, authority and our agency for our own lives. We take on stories of fear, victimhood and powerlessness. Maybe some of us truly were victims at one point and we were legitimately very wounded by things that have happened and our identities get wrapped up in these events, roles and stories we let them define and limit us. These are weeds, rocks, gravel that choke out the truth even when we think we are open to receiving it, we limit it. We choose fear, maybe not consciously, over love.  Christ came to show us what love and true freedom looks like, how it lives, how it moves and breathes, walks and talks. “If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.” (Matthew Chapter 10:39)
