Jeremiah 3:4-5
Yet you say to me, ‘Father, you have been my guide since my youth. Surely you won’t be angry forever! Surely you can forget about it!’ So you talk, but you keep on doing all the evil you can.
You are what you consistently do, but we don’t always like to admit it. We like to believe that things are important to us and that our desires and beliefs are who we are, even if we don’t live them out. Maya Angelou gets quoted all the time “When someone shows you who they are believe them the first time.” The someone we need to believe the most is the person in the mirror.
I watched a Ted Talk recently that is titled “The Magic of not giving a F%&#k” by Sarah Knight Now I know you are probably really concerned about where I am going with this and how this is going to be biblical. This Ted talk is the dirty mouth version of believing who someone including ourselves with who show you they are by what they do, including and especially ourselves. This means that our time, money, resources, energy, emotions don’t lie -they tell the story of who we are and what is really important to us. Sarah sat down with herself and her ‘yeah buts…’, what she ‘said’ she wanted vs how she was actually spending her valuable resources, her life, her ‘f&$#k bucks’ as she calls them.
The tone of Jeremiah is one that is almost rising to our current level of cursing. If God cursed in modern vernacular he might be saying to the Judeans and the Israelites ‘WTF’! He has clearly had it with them and is calling them on the their duplicity, betrayal and faithlessness. They are ‘saying’ the right things but they are doing all the ‘wrong’ things. It doesn’t add up! Our actions and how we spend our life resources don’t lie! He is comparing them to thieves, cheating spouses and prostitutes - pretty strong language for that time period!
I have a call coming up today with one of my coaches, and I had committed to getting a couple of things done that guess what… aren’t done… and I was already in my mind thinking of all the very good reasons why - my ‘yeah buts..’ I read the first few chapters of Jeremiah and sat down and got really honest with myself and ‘owned’ that I had different priorities than getting these few things done. How I budgeted my resources clearly tells me that. So I need to ‘own it’ and then decide if these are truly my priorities and desires and make some adjustments to how I am going to spend my future resources or get honest and adjust my spoken desires, goals and commitments…
I hope my post wasn’t offensive today and that you can see my tongue in cheek way to get our attention. Sometimes I curse at my kids, very rarely so that when I do it gets their attention! When used strategically it can be quite effective. I think the Bible even demonstrates this. I really try to glean practical wisdom to my everyday life in my Christan walk, and sometimes we need to bring it into modern day language and ‘get real’ with ourselves and our faith, and call BS with ourselves! I think God can handle a little cursing in an example if it helps glorify him, and gets us to take our actions and our faith walk more seriously.
