 Day 119

📝 Reflection

 Proverbs 10: 1

A wise child brings joy to a father; a foolish child brings grief to a mother.

As I was reading proverbs Chapter 10 this morning, it occurred to me that you can also use Proverbs like one of the modern day quizzes that we love to take. Go through chapter 10 and rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 and get a wisdom ‘score’ or a ‘foolishness’ score. You could almost use it like a diagnostic tool - you will be able to identify which areas needs some work!

I will give a personal example. As I was reading vs. 19 ‘Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.’ I was convicted ( this is ‘christianese’ for called out) when I read this verse. I am a verbal processor, and I have lost count of the number of times my mouth has gotten me into trouble. I sometimes don’t know when to ‘shut up’, ‘give up’, or leave well enough alone…etc… I also tend to be judgmntal and a ‘right fighter’ and will defend my position until the bitter end. The ending usually is bitter for us judgey right fighters.

I have done a lot of work in this particular area, so if I were taking this as a test a few years ago I definitely would have scored ‘super foolish’ with this character trait. But since doing a lot of spiritual and emotional growth and  self development work and, I ‘think’ I score more towards the wise side now, but I still have room to grow. I am definitely learning and practicing more about when to keep my mouth shut, this type of growth is very trial by fire. I often learn the hard way after I have stuck my foot in my mouth.  But just like the Bible promises, my relationship are much better now, I have a lot more peace and harmony internally and externally, as I getter better and more wise with my words.

The other thing that gets me into trouble with talking too much I have learned is that my brain processes things much differently that a lot of people. The enneagram has helped me a lot to not only help understand myself but also other people as well. I am a visionary and creative thinker. I have a lot of fun just dreaming and exploring ideas and possibilities. I am a 9w1 (peacemaker with perfectionist tendencies) on the enneagram which is actually commonly described as the dreamer. We love to imagine what a ‘perfect’ world, situation, relationship, job, or life etc. would be like.  I didn’t know that a lot of other brains didn’t think like mine, so often when I am just ‘having fun’ and dreaming out loud, others if they don’t know or work like this are misunderstanding my musings and taking them more seriously than I am. You can see how this might lead to some trouble. I also am a people pleaser, so if my playful ideas inspire others into action this can be potentially great for them, but maybe not so good for me. But in their excitement and because ‘I am happy if you are happy’ type, then I might not speak up and say ‘I was just kidding or I am not sure if I actually want to go in that direction…’ Yikes.

This particular trait has gotten me into lots of sticky situations and caused resentment in me, towards myself, but I might take it out on others.🤦‍♀️ So this particular trait leads me into others traits mentioned like in vs. 31 ‘ the mouth of the godly person gives wise advice, but the toungue that deceives will be cut off’. Then this being nice and going along and going against my better judgement leads me to deceive which then leads me to not have integrity which in vs. 9 says ‘people with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall.’  Oh what a tangled web we weave.. 🕸

So you can see how interrelated things are and can get complicated, and out of hand quickly and get us in situations like we talked about yesterday that lead us down paths of folly and foolishness and doing things that are against our better judgement.

So I invite you if you are willing to be honest, vulnerable and courageous and read chapter 10 for yourself and see where you might fall on the wisdom vs. foolishness scale.

Also I mentioned the enneagram today, if you have never heard of that, it is a great personality and motivation assessment tool that can be a ‘power tool’ of transformation and growth. If you have blindspots, you will be shown what they are which is not always fun in the beginning but it is fantastic! And you can break the habit of being yourself and unlock your potential superpowers! As a peacemaker, my ‘default’ settings, ‘deadly sin’ or ‘flesh’ can lead me into ‘sloth’ful🦥 behaviors, but my virtue and potential is to be fully engaged and a person of action! That is something worth striving for! I have found the enneagram to be a very helpful, diagnostic and motivating tool especially when paired with the Bible, my faith and understanding how God designed all of us so beautifully, uniquely and for a purpose.
