📝 Reflection

 Ecclesiastes 8:1

How wonderful to be wise, to analyze and interpret things Wisdom lights up a person’s face, softening its harshness.

Wisdom is good and seeking it is good. There is no such thing as getting it completely right or perfect. Because it is nuanced, situational and it involves humans! Perfection is in imperfection, nature demonstrates this so beautifully and magnificently. I have talked about the enneagram before, which is a personality framework that is amazingly accurate. Anyway, if I had to guess I think Solomon was a 1 - which is known as the perfectionist or the reformer. You can just sense his frustration which is very common for those that are striving so hard to do things ‘right’ all of the time. If they aren’t careful they can get very cynical, critical and frustrated. Their deadly sin is anger, it simmers below the surface until they can’t take it anymore.  They suppress it and try to ‘tolerate’ things because it isn’t ‘right’ to get angry.  The flip side of this or the virtue is serenity. They begin to accept that somethings are great the way they are and they can have peace with what is and begin to relax and enjoy life.

Perfectionism is not isolated only to the stereotypical perfectionist, many of us have this tendency. Can you relate? We can find our selves taking things so seriously and trying to be so good and right all of the time that we just ‘suck the life’ out of life.🙋‍♀️ I have definitely been guilty of this!  I am a 9 on the enneagram which is the peacemaker but I have a heavy 1 ‘wing’ since that is my next door neighbor, I borrow a lot from that personality. The 9w1 is known as the ‘dreamer’ or the idealist, this can look like the ‘good girl’ or boy.

Learning to relax and get off of my high horse, has been the best thing that ever happened to me. Actually I didn’t get off willingly, I was knocked off 🤣. It has been a little painful, got a bit banged up and bruised, but it has also been freeing!

So many of us are walking around with similar heavy burdens, living life as if we are taking an exam and getting graded all the time. Our inner dialogue is even harsher. We can be harsh with others, in our focus on getting things right we can damage our relationships and hurt people we love in the process if we aren’t careful. This is not wise. We should never value or make getting something right or perfect over someone’s feelings or feeling valued. Wisdom is firm but kind and loving, we need to be kinder to ourselves and to others. Let’s be generous with each other and ourselves and assume we are all doing our best.

Wisdom shows us that we do need to strive to be and do our best, but best does not mean perfect. In fact perfect is pretty boring!  Solomon is showing us that true wisdom brings joy and lightness, not heaviness and weariness.  All we can ever hope do is the best we can with what we have at the time and ask God to bless it and use it. Put His super on our natural. Work hard, enjoy the fruits of our labor and love each other, love God and know that it matters and let go of needing to understand all of it. He is the author✍️ you are just a letter in a word on a page in HIStory that isn’t finished being written yet. Life isn’t perfect, humans aren’t perfect so there is no way for wisdom to be perfect. Wisdom knows that it doesn’t know and there for can work hard and enjoy the ride.
