Day 87- Why Having a Vision is So Important

Psalm 22: 16-18
My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have all pierced my hands and feet. I can count all my bones. My enemies stare at me and gloat. they divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing.
Now, in this passage and chapter of Psalms David is literally sharing a vision in the form of a prophesy. I am going to take some liberties with the concept of vision and hopefully to encourage you to share, explore, be curious about, and get some if you don’t have any. I think it is not only important to have visions but to share them. Why? Well, lets look at the example of David and this scripture. God gave him a prophetic vision, what if David had decided it was just too weird to share, if he had a requirement of understanding it before sharing it, or just didn’t think it was important enough to share? The sharing of this vision and prophecy helps us as modern readers and all who have come before us and will come after us see and understand the divine nature of the Bible and the Word of God. It probably also helped him in the moment to release it and share it, even though he might not have understood it.
It can hurt us to have visions and not share them, I would argue that it is even toxic to keep then hidden and dormant. Now I am not talking about visions only in the sense of prophesy as David experienced in this example, but hopes, dreams, interests, aspirations, gift, and talents. When we share them we not only give ourselves permission to dream and create and be authentic but we in turn can inspire and give permission to others to do the same. There are so many things that stop us; mostly it boils down to fear. Fear of being judged, wrong, bad at something, timing, causing problems, ‘rocking the boat’, wondering if you or it matters, and on and on and on. When we keep things inside, we reinforce all of these messages. What if your vision or thing inspires me or someone else - who are you to keep quiet and small when you think of it this way.
We often believe the lie that if we express ourselves that we are selfish, self centered, self important, all the things. What if that isn’t true? Not only is it not true, but the opposite is true. The more we express ourselves the more we help others and the less ‘weird’ we make it. Also, if we can give ourselves permission to not only express ourselves but also not put any limits on it, like time, effort, bigness, importance etc,. We can invite the attitudes of curiosity, play, experimentation to come in and we can hold things loosely if it isn’t all about us. David expressed it and let it go and was able to pivot quickly as we talked about previously, he also wasn’t just defined by one thing. He was a shepherd, a musician, a warrior, a leader and a king in addition to being a prophet at times. You can be lots of things too. The routine and responsibilities of life can weigh us down and lead us to believe that these things are for children and other people.
They are not, your vision helps me have my vision there are ripple effects beyond that you won’t even know about, just like in this example of David. God also is a creator and a visionary, we are made in his image, of course that means that you are supposed to be creative and have visions as well. If you don’t have visions or dreams (or don’t think you do) maybe it is time to get some. If you have them, but have kept them stifled and hidden away, maybe it is time to step out. If you have a vision, but you think you are stuck in only that vision and you have something new whispering in your heart, let go of holding tightly to that as part of your identity and explore and play… Don’t worry too much, rather pray and hold your visions and plans loosely. Through prayer, curiosity and exploration the Lord will guide you. Psalm 25 reminds us in vs 4 you can pray like David did “Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow.”
What vision is laying hidden and dormant in your soul that is longing to come out? This could be one of the reasons we in turn hide in our habits and addictions. What if the path to freedom is the very thing you are so afraid of and hiding away? I have found this to be personally true, the more I acknowledge my visions and get curious and follow where they lead me the more I am stepping into my freedom adventure and I am also helping others in the process, go figure! God is so good! I would love for you to be brave and comment below and start to come out of hiding and share a vision, gift, talent etc that you would like to explore - I know you will receive so much encouragement and ‘me too’, please do that thing I need you, etc…!
I had a vision of what life could be like free from my habit of wanting my daily ritual of having Chardonnay to relax and the energy drain it was causing in my life. I know God gave me that vision and then put the resources and other people in my line of vision who had already done it, because they followed their vision and experience and were brave enough to share it for me to be inspired by… and so it goes… Now I am onto the next vision, that was just the beginning! Please don’t ignore or dismiss your visions and dreams - we need you, the world needs you, people who don’t even exist yet need you!
