📝 Reflection
Matthew 25: 28-29
“Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.”
These are serious words to consider. This is at the end of the parable about three servants. Here is the paraphrased version of this story; a master goes on a trip and leaves his three servants in charge of his money while he is gone. He have five bags of money to the first servant, two bags to the second and one bag to the third, he gave each an amount according to their abilities. The first invested the money was given and double it, leaving him with 10 bags of money. The second went to work and earned two more bags, leaving him with 4 bags. The third was afraid to lose his bag, so he dug a hole in the ground to hide the money and keep it safe. Then the master returned and was very pleased with the first and second servant because they were not only responsible with the money but they used it and create more with it. He said to both of them “well done my good and faithful servant, lets celebrate and I will give you even more money since you have handled this small amount to well. The third told him how he was afraid to lose they money so he proudly showed him how he buried the money and was able to return the original amount. To the third servant the master said, ‘you are wicked and lazy, why didn’t you at least take the money to the bank so it would have at least earned interest?’. Then he ordered the one bag of money to be taken from the third servant and given to the first servant.
Many of us live ‘small’ lives compared to what God has in store for us. By small I don’t mean that everyone is meant be ‘big’, famous, known, wealthy, great etc.. As we were reminded yesterday in God’s kingdom the least will be first and the first will be last. We are all gifted with life, ability, talents and callings. What we do with it is a gift back to our creator. Many of us think ‘who am I to do this or that’ and we let fear, people pleasing, pride, image, laziness, anger, gluttony, envy, greed etc.. get in our way and lead us another way which leads us to bury our gifts and talents in the ground and/or misuse our abilities. Most people who are not using their gifts and talents know they aren’t and they have convinced themselves that maybe it is even the right thing to do or not meant for them or that they are even being good by being modest and humble. There are lots of ways we can deceive ourselves into playing small. The heart of the matter is fear.
When you get all of the ‘reasons’ out of the way and think about the gift of life that you have been given and a creator who loved you enough to create you specifically and uniquely - who are you NOT to use your gifts, talents and abilities? When you do this your who life becomes and act of service to God and to others, and you get rewarded because it feels energizing, humbling, honoring and adventurous to be living in your purpose with alignment and integrity. For some this might be homeschooling your kids, planting and tending your gardens, cooking for others, using your gifts for numbers and math, organizational skills, etc…
Let your light shine ✨. Together we can encourage each other to rise and shine for the glory of God, that is the adventure and the choice we have been given. We arrive on earth with spiritual amnesia and we are called to wake up and remember who we are and live as if we know and undertake that!! We are invited to live lives of contribution - this is what love does. Hoarding or keeping our contributions small and safe, or large and in charge, is the ego's counterfeit way of getting vs. giving.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
What does your life say about who you think you are? Are you playing small, or maybe even playing big but from a wrong motivation of fear and of 'getting' vs. giving?
