Proverbs 14: 6-9
A mocker seeks wisdom and never finds it, but knowledge comes easily to those with understanding.
Stay away from fools for you won’t find knowledge on their lips.
The prudent understand where they are going, but fools deceive themselves.
Fools make fun of guilt, but the godly acknowledge it and seek reconciliation.
Another set of great reminders on your wisdom and growth journey. Be careful who you surround yourself with and who you allow to speak into your life! This is not just about the people in your lives, but the shows and movies you watch, the music you listen to, the dj’s if you still listen to radio, the news, social media, books, podcasts - it all matters! If you don’t think it does, read the above verses again- the prudent understand, but fools deceive themselves! We often can dismiss and rationalize things as being ‘harmless’, because we maybe have them in small doses and/or because we ‘love’ our people, but it all add’s up. Just as we are people of influence, whether it is your intention or not, you are also a person who can be and is easily influenced, more than you care to admit or realize!
This is a really complex and hard subject and often the reason people don’t achieve their goals, get farther on their own growth and development journeys, or grow in wisdom because of it. We love our people and when we want to grow and change we don’t always get the support and encouragement from our loved ones, friends or colleagues. Humans in general don’t like change for themselves or in other people, it is naturally threatening. As a realtor I coach people through this all the time. As a coach, I coach people all the time. As a student and someone on their own transformation journey I have to coach myself, get coaching and surround myself with people who are also on similar journeys and paths! It is not just a ‘good’ idea, it is essential, and in my humble opinion a non negotiable if you truly want lasting sustainable change.
If we have learned nothing after coming out of a worldwide pandemic it is how quickly we can adjust to new normals and also how threatening and polarizing our beliefs and lifestyle choices can be to others. How quickly we can ‘turn’ on each other. If you don’t get with someone else’s ‘program’ you will likely be made fun of and mocked. So if you believe a certain way and feel like you are swimming upstream or going against popular opinion or widespread beliefs and customs you especially need to heed this warning! You need to find your people and stay connected in a community where you will be encouraged in your growth.
Many people embark on a transformation journey but they don’t understand or think about this aspect of it and just how critical it is. You have to know how you are going to handle nay sayers, or people who genuinely love you and want to support you but either don’t know how or understand and therefore might unintentionally ‘sabotage’ you with their good intentions. You need to expect your own needs for connection and support and how disconnected and unsupported you may start feeling from your people and community by your new changes and lifestyle. These feelings are powerful and may have you start questioning yourself and your path. It can be very lonely and isolating, and we may decide to give up or make the choice that it just isn’t worth it.
Depending on where you are in your journey this can cause even more problems. You might have grown enough that you know that you are on the right path, but you choose to stop or not go as far to keep your people and relationships status quo and comfortable. Then this will create a tension and a divide internally that lead to some really dark places and compound your foolishness.
I am as usual exploring this from a place of being there and having been there myself. I did a prior post called ‘even if’. This is a question I have to ask and answer for myself often when I am in this place of in-between. Wanting to grow and become and wanting to keep my relationships status quo. Unfortunately the reality is that when you change your relationships will change, and some relationships will even need to stop. If your relationships are strong and your people truly love you, they will come around and adjust, you have just have to be patient. As you go through this process you need to surround yourself with others who are like-minded and on a similar path, otherwise you will be ‘pushing a boulder’ up a hill, better to leverage the help of others and make the journey easier, faster and more joyful! You are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with and the hours in between all of the other things you listen to, read and watch! Be wise!
