Proverbs 2:1-7
My Child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom and concentrate on understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
What does it mean to treasure something? The definition of treasure is: wealth stored up or hoarded, wealth of any kind or in any form, something of great worth or value, a collection of precious things. Above we are told that if we treasure God’s commands, we will receive a treasure of wisdom, common sense, and understanding. Seems like a pretty good deal to me!
But I must admit that this is a pretty new thing that I am actually doing.
I spent many years crying out and wanting wisdom, but not doing all that I need to do to actually receive the treasure that is offered. We have all heard the saying, ‘you can’t serve two masters’, and it is a true one! But many of us spend years if not our entire lives thinking that maybe we are the exception to this or we live in denial that we are actually caught in this trap. When it comes down to it every human has access to certain resources and the big equalizer - TIME- we all have the same 24 hrs a day. How we spend our time, energy, and money indicate where our treasure is.
I will share personally and see if this resonates. I have been a believer for nearly 17 years now. For a lot of these years I have had what I thought was a great practice of reading devotions, praying, participating in bible studies and volunteering. All good things that were yielding some good results and some wisdom, but not what I would consider a treasure. The majority of my time and resources if I am honest was in seeking comfort and peace, even my time with God was in seeking these things. This is where my treasure truly was. God was a side dish to my main meal of personal comfort and peace. My life and the consequences of this became unbearable and I reached a cross roads as many of us do. What we do at this cross roads is our choice.
Me: for a long time I procrastinated, tried many ways to have my cake and eat it too, find other ways, delayed, denied before I finally surrendered to the fact that ‘my way’ and serving two masters wasn’t working. But surrender is just the beginning and it happens one step and a time and is a process. I had to give up and surrender and accept that I would have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable and for my peace to be disrupted. I was seeking peace and comfort and spending my time acquiring things, people pleasing and making other people’s desires my master. Now there is nothing wrong with having nice things, achieving success, loving others, attaining high levels in your career, etc.., but if these things in and of themselves are your treasure, this will not lead to satisfaction and fulfillment. It is like chasing and trying to catch the wind.
