Job 33: 4
For the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath
of the Almighty gives me life.
In the above scripture a man named Elihu enters the conversation. He basically comes in after listening to the conversation between Job and his three friends and says, let me set you all straight, I can’t stand by and listen to this anymore, I am going to step in to speak and defend God. Not that God needs defending, but Job and his three friends need to be reminded of who God is and who they as humans are in relationship to Him. Job and his three friends are stuck in their human-ness of trying to understand, explain and complain about what has happened to Job.
The scripture above was one of a few that caught my attention in particular because it acknowledges the order of things. My breath is not ‘my’ breath, it is God’s breath that he allows me to have. I don’t fully understand how it works, and I don’t need to, I just need to know that I have it. There is nothing I can do to create my own breath. There is also nothing I can do to stop it other than by murdering myself. It is automatic, it is done for me and because of it I get to experience life. Take a moment now, pause and really think about this for yourself. Take a deep breathe, hold your breath, you can experience and observe and control it for a moment, but you are not in fully in control. God does not need us, he wants us and we don’t have to understand it, we just can accept it and know it. He wants to be in relationship with us, but he does not need us, hence he gave us intelligence and the freedom to choose.
Among some of the other things Elihu says to Job in chapter 35 vs. 6-8 is: “Look up into the sky, and see the clouds high above you. If you sin, how does that affect God? Even if you sin again and again, what effect will it have on him? If you are good, is this some great gift to him? What could you possible give him? No, your sins affect only people like yourself, and your good deeds also affect only humans.”
What if you could let go of the need to understand and just allow yourself to know God? What if you allowed yourself to just be in awe of the miracle and gift of His breath that allows you to have this experience we call life? What if you accepted that you were special and loved and the only evidence that you needed was your ability to breathe? What if you left the burden of justice and judgement up to him? Can you feel the tension leave your shoulders and your lungs expanding in gratitude and relief? Do you need to understand or can you just allow yourself to know?
