📝 Reflection
Psalm
57:9
For your unfailing love is as high as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
61:7-8
May your unfailing love and faithfulness watch over him. Then I will sing praises to your name for ever as I fulfill my vows each day.
62: 1-2
I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes fro him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.
62:11
God gas spoken plainly, and I have heard it many times; Power, O God, belongs to you; unfailing love, O Lord, is yours. Surely you repay all people according to what they have done.
63: 3
Your unfailing love is better than life itself: how I praise you!
As I was reading Psalms this morning, the words unfailing, faithful, and power kept catching my attention. I looked up other versions and similar words like steadfast are also used. David seems to have absolute faith, understanding and confidence in God that few of us seems to be able to achieve. I also make the assumption that he had this relationship with God before he was chosen as King and it was this characteristic that was the reason he was chosen. He trusted and relied on God’s nature to be unfailing and stead fast. As I was thinking about this for myself the analogy of a chair came to mind.
I trust and have faith in chairs and what they do. I sit on them with the expectation that they will support me. I also relax, I don’t sit nervously wondering if it will collapse at any moment. I don’t wonder if it will tip over. I understand it’s function and nature and I trust it. I also understand how I am supposed to interact with it. I don’t run into them and expect them to stop me and turn me around and sit me down. I don’t sit next to it and then get angry or upset that it didn’t see where I was sitting and move under me. As a structure I can also interact with it in various ways and get some different support; I can lean on it, I can stand on it, I can sit on the edge, I can maybe kneel on it, sit backwards on it etc.. Depending on my interaction with it also modifies my expectation of support. If I sit on a chair as designed, I can get full support and relax and trust.
Are you tracking with this… Are you shaking your head like I am at how much I trust a chair and yet I struggle with trusting and relying on the creator of the universe🪑🤦♀️ . A chair is reliable because I can see it. God is not because I can’t see him and also because he doesn’t run my life perfectly according to my expectations of comfort and happiness levels. Is this just me? We get so caught up in our circumstances and our limited view of the world according to ‘me and mine’ that we just can’t understand why God would allow suffering, bad things, evil and things that just don’t make sense to us.
Let’s take the example of the requirement that many of us have on ‘seeing is believing’. There are things we believe in and rely on that we can’t see; gravity, wind, electricity, sound, other types of signals that allow us to text and use our cell phones etc… And yet… we can’t possibly rely on and trust God or a higher power? Even those of us that claim to be believers, don’t fully trust in his unfailing nature of power and love. It is his very nature and yet, we think things like - ‘well He loves, so and so, but He can’t love me because I ….’. If his nature is love, he can’t not love. Just like gravity is gravity and it doesn’t interact differently with me than it does with you, just like a chair is a chair for me and for you. Let me know how this ‘sits’ 🤣🪑with you!
Another observation, David had so much confidence in himself, not because of who he was but because of who God was and that he was created by God in a certain way. He didn’t question God’s nature. He sometimes questioned how things played out and the circumstances he found himself in at times, but he didn’t question God, he took it all to God and then got back to work and life with a renewed mind, body and heart because he trusted God’s unfailing ‘is-ness’.

What do you have faith in? What does this look like in real life? What does it mean to have faith in God? What does it look life in your life? How do you live it?
