Day 92- What do you believe in?

📝 Reflection

Psalm 49: 5-9

Why should I fear when trouble comes, when enemies surround me? They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches. Test they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God. Redemption does not come so easily, for no one can ever pay enough to live forever.

16-18

So don’t be dismayed when the wicked grow rich and their homes become ever more splendid. For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave. In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success, But they will die like all before them and never again see the light of day.

There are a lot of misconceptions about money and faith. Money in and of itself is not bad. In fact it is a very useful tool and a lot of good can be done with it. We just need to guard our hearts from thinking it is the answer and giving it more power than it deserves. And also giving more honor to people who have it because they have it.  Money, the having of it or the lack of having it will amplify and reveal your heart.

As we can see from this psalm it is easy to to fall into the belief in money and also of self importance when you have it. As we are also reminded, death comes for us all and you can’t take your money with you. You can’t buy your way out of death with money. The only way to eternal life is believing in the creator of it all, God. Life here on earth is only phase 1. There is a bigger economy at work, don’t play small or sell yourself short by believing in money, wealth or status as your only measure of success.

I have shared with you that I have not always been a believer, in fact I ran in the opposite direction of God partly due to my relationship and beliefs around money. I grew up very poor and in chaotic home with parents who fought and struggled not just with each other but often around the lack of money. My father was also a preacher.  But he was not a preacher who practiced what he preached and only talked the walk, he did not walk the walk.  My grandparents were very comfortable middle class good people who were very generous but didn’t attend church or believe in God as far as I was aware. The combination of all of this for me created a paradigm that God equaled poverty, struggle, depression, unhappiness etc.

Until I became a mom at the age of 30, I lived an intentionally hedonistic and existential life. My main ambition and a decision I made as a child watching all of the adults in my life and taking notes was to get a good job, make good money, be able to take care of myself jic, have the money to afford children and be a stay at home mom if I wanted etc.. On the surface this is actually pretty admirable and smart, but God was nowhere in the picture. It was all about me and my belief in myself and money as the answer to a good life. Giving birth and being a vehicle for new life being created can tend to open one’s mind and heart open to believing in something greater.  I am so grateful for God seeking and inviting me into a relationship with him as a young mom. It has been a long slow walk of my faith growing step by step, he is so patient with my hard headedness, self sufficiency and stubbornness.

I share all of this to invite you to consider your own beliefs. If you aren’t sure there is a God, maybe you could investigate your stories and experiences that lead you to this belief. Maybe you do believe but aren’t really sure what that means or how it is supposed to show up in your life? It is often said that if someone were to look at your schedule and your bank account they would be able to see what you believe in. How you spend your time, energy and your money is indicative of your priorities. Maybe you can reflect on this and see if your heart, beliefs and resources are in alignment. When we are out of alignment it can create all kinds of bad fruit or weeds in our life in the form of addictions, habits, weight problems, money problems, broken relationships and more.  Maybe you have enough money and it has you fooled that everything is ok or should be, but yet…. it isn’t ….Maybe, just maybe.. your soul and maybe God is inviting you seek Him.

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

What beliefs and programming are running your life? Have you ever stopped to take inventory and be self aware? Did you know you can change? It takes work, but thoughts and beliefs are choices. You are a grown up now, is your inner child and the beliefs he or she formed running your life?
