📝 Reflection
2 Kings 19: 29-30
Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Here is the proof that what I say is true:
“This year you will eat only what grows up by itself, and next year you will eat what springs up from that, and next year you will beat what springs up from that but in the third year you will plant crops and harvest them; you will tend vineyards and eat their fruit. And you who are left in Judah, who have escaped the ravages of the siege, will put roots down in your own soil and will grow up and flourish.”
So we are fast forwarding ahead in 2 Kings to chapters 18-19, after we get told about king after king in both Israel and Judah that are getting it wrong and doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight. Finally King Hezekiah comes along to give us some hope ‘because he did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight, just as his ancestor David had done’(18:3). It isn’t all good news though, in the mean time Assyria and King Sennacherib had grown to be a huge power. Assyria comes to attack Judah. King Hezekiah send messengers to negotiate with him and come to a peace agreement and even offers to pay a tribute of Assyria’s choosing. King Sennacherib sends a bill to King Hezekiah and he attempts to pay it, but King Sennacherib sends messengers back that says you know what I think we are going to attack and conquer you anyway and even insults the Lord in the message.
Hezekiah orders his men not to respond and then he goes to the Lord to for help. A new prophet Isaiah also comes onto the scene 👏 at this time. Isaiah reassures Hezekiah and says ignore King Sennacherib and everything he says, he is going to die anyway. Hezekiah goes to the Lord in prayer and petition and asks God to rescue them from Assyria and show the world once again that He alone is the one and only true God. Isaiah confirms that God received the petition and will indeed rescue Judah, here is a great outtake from his message from God in regards to Assyria 19:28 … “And because of your raging against me and your arrogance, which I have heard or myself, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the same road on which you came.” So basically we have this great message from God through Isaiah that is reassuring to Hezekiah and the people. He reminds them who He is and also says don’t you know it was Me who allowed Assyria to get this powerful as an opportunity for Me to demonstrate who is really in charge?
After this message he also delivers a personal message to Hezekiah. That basically states how their land will be restored and eventually prosper again. But it isn’t instant, it will take a few years - it is a process! 🥁 Yes we have to trust the process. The reason I sum up the whole story for you here is to demonstrate this. From the perspective of transformation and habit change, there is a process to achieving lasting change. I am going to get metaphorical here. In this analogy and story we are going to pretend we are Hezekiah and Sennacherib is our ‘bad habit’ or thing we want to change. Sometimes we do see this as our literal enemy, the thing that is keeping us stuck or from getting from ‘here’ to our desired ‘there’.
Ok, so if you are tracking with me, we do go through a process of changing and even deciding to change. First we often try to negotiate with ourselves and the thing we want to change, just like Hezekiah did with the Sennacherib, totally normal. For most, there will come a day of reckoning when we will see the truth that ‘the thing’ can’t be negotiated with. It wants to be in control it won’t go quietly or easily as we would like. Then we are at a crossroads, a reckoning, a fork in the road. You must then ask yourself: do I really want to change and do the hard work or do I just accept that this is just going to be a part of who I am or continue to be at war with myself? If you choose change, you must continue to trust the process, and come to a place of acceptance that we have to deal with it more seriously, strategically and with total commitment. We have to look at the process and trust the process and go. As the scripture indicates above, once you change, there is still a process to ‘solidify’ the change and make it permanent, lasting and a lifestyle. Then how you change will ripple out into your life and relationships. Changes need to be integrated in the whole of your life. When you change, everything changes. Many people don’t know this and aren’t ready for the challenges that may lie ahead, and then when they encounter resistance they revert back. Others of you may be very aware and afraid of what these changes might be or thinking that they already know and this fear of the ‘predicted known’ or the unknown can keep people stuck..
Knowledge when applied is power and knowing that there is a process to change and then trusting the process will help you achieve lasting change and finally get off the ‘hamster wheel’ 🎡. It was only when I let go of things I thought I knew and only doing some of the things and finally trusted the experts and those where who had achieved what I wanted and trusted the process that I finally had success.
