📝 Reflection
Psalm 127: 2-3
A psalm of Solomon
It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat: for God gives rest to his loved ones.
Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.
This was a short but powerful psalm and a really interesting one because it seemly has a break and shifts gears to an unrelated topic. The first few verses are about recognizing that God is our provider and gives examples of how useless all of our hard work is unless we understand and stand under our understanding that we are the created living in the world of a creator.
The word understand is to fully know, acknowledge and to accept as fact or truth, to have thorough or technical knowledge or expertise, to grasp the meaning of, have the power of comprehension; achieve a grasp of the nature, significance or explanation of something, to believe or infer something to be the case…. It is a powerful word, it quite literally means that we stand under and relate to something or someone in a specific way. There is no confusion.
Then the psalm breaks and turns in a different direction and speaks about how children are a gift and a reward and how joyful is the man who has children. So I really prayed and meditated on the meaning and asked for understanding about the psalm as a whole and how it all related together. Here is what came to me. Children give us the gift of understanding God in a more comprehensive way. We are His children. Many of us also become parents but even if you personally haven’t then you have been a child at some point. We all can understand because we all have been a part of a parent child relationship at some point. Even the child that was not blessed with good and loving parents still often has a bond and a desire for relationship with that parent. When it is not good, life for both parties shows evidence of this.
I was blessed to be a part of a prison ministry team for several years. I saw this play out repeatedly first hand. Even the most wounded children desire relationship with their parents. Many of these ‘children’ were even the adults in prison themselves. A lot of the trouble they were experiencing in life that landed them in prison could be traced back to childhood wounds. The parent child relationship when it is not seen and treated as a blessing and a parent mistreats a child is devastating to all who are involved and ripples out. Sadly this type of relating with others is generational and is passed on. How one learns to relate inside of a family is often carried out to the world and spread like a virus. We are all influential whether we recognize it or not.
When a parent is leading and relating from a position of love, mature authority, respect and wanting what is best for their children this is when we can begin to understand how much we are loved by God. When you become a parent your world changes in an instant. You begin to understand the limitless nature of love. I can remember this so vividly and then when I was pregnant with my daughter I can also remember being worried about there being enough love for another child, it was so hard to imagine. Then she came and of course I learned the truth, that there is always more love and more room in my heart. God is a God of abundance, limitlessness, infinity that is why he can’t be limited to a physical body or by the same limitations we live by and abide by the laws and principals that we have to operate with in and stand under, like gravity, physics, and time, etc..
Yet, we so often forget this and try ‘so hard’ to do life in our own strength, mean while our abba father is going ‘hey, there - I am here and I love you and want to help’👋. ‘Hellooooo..’ Any parent can understand this, when our kids are little and they go from being completely helpless and dependent to learning to move around with their own strength how defiant they become. “No, I do it!”. We as parents loving stand by and let them as long as it is safe and then we jump in and rescue, guide and assist as needed. Kids are just fine being independent until they ‘need’ something. Aren’t we the same way. As a parent we often like to remind them ‘hey, I am here to help’. There are also the extreme parents who want to do everything for their kids and with their ‘good intentions’ they cripple their children.
We are so lucky to have the perfect parent, just the right balance of allowing us to be independent and figure things out on our own, and forgiving when we are stubborn, loves us despite our defiance and rebellion, endlessly patient while our levels of capability and understanding grow and the ‘lights’ come on. As we start to understand the relationship and how it is supposed to work and ‘we get with the program’, then ‘we can rest and no work so anxiously in our own strength’. Just as we want our own children to realize, because we love them so much. If we love our children so much and we can understand that then why is it so hard for us to stand under God’s infinite love and provision? But many of us stand outside and are throwing tantrums like three year olds shaking our fists at each other, ourselves and at life and maybe at God vs just accepting the hand of our loving ‘father’. So if you have wounds from your imperfect earthly parents, it is worth doing the work to heal and accept and stand under God’s true and everlasting love, He will help you if you let Him. He gave us free will it is our choice to understand and stand under His protection and provision, he won’t make you.
