Day 116- risks of being short sighted

📝 Reflection

Proverbs 6: 6-11

Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest- then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attach you like an armed robber.

Our natural tendency is to be short sighted, this is our survival brain in control that is only trying to get through the day or current circumstances. Living in only a short sighted manner is another form of what is often referred to as a ‘dry drunk’. Have you heard of this term? Drunkenness is a state of mind, just like being sober is. Many think that just abstaining from  alcohol is being sober, and it is, but it is a whole different ball games to be sober-minded. The Bible discusses this quite a bit. Even though proverbs 6 doesn’t specifically use that terminology, it addresses the behavior of many ‘dry drunks’ and their tendency to be short sighted and concerned only about the current moment and circumstances. They are driven by impulse and survival only.

To be wise is to be a future oriented not focused, while being very present and aware of current circumstance but always thinking about future consequenses of current behavior. When I was a high school student, way back in the 80’s when they still taught drivers ed back in school I had a teacher that gave us a very valuable insight and probably saved many lives by including a nugget of wisdom regarding drunk driving. He told us- the mistake that all drunk drivers make is that they only look right in front of the car - they are literally short sighted.

This is what ‘drunk-minded’ people do, we look only at what we can get by with in the moment and the short term. I use the term we here intentionally- because I am still in process of moving from a ‘dry drunk’ to a more sober-minded person. I have not had a drink of alcohol in 2.5 years, but without doing the work to address the underlying causes I would have just switched habits. Over drinking was a symptom, it wasn’t the problem, although it did causes it’s own problems, so things that are chemically addictive and also habit forming are a double fun combo!  So there is no judgement here as I am writing, I am preaching to the choir. I would venture to guess that many if not the majority of people are ‘dry drunks- otherwise the diet, fitness, alcohol free movement would not be as huge as they are.

Being sober-minded is similar to being a good driver. You are looking ahead, looking right ahead, all around, behind - being vigilant about all of your surroundings, but relaxed and confident. After a lot of practice, experience and time you get on autopilot with these things. It is similar with living our life in a sober-minded way. Especially if you have been a ‘dry drunk’, it takes a lot of vigilance, practice, time and experience but eventually you become the good driver of your life aka wisdom sets in and becomes your co-pilot.

The saying “Why put off till tomorrow what you can do today” reminds me of a modern day paraphrase of what the verse above is saying. My motto was “Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow”. I honestly used to even be proud of my procrastinating and ‘relaxed’ and ‘chill’ way of living life, until it eventually caught up with me, just as the Bible reminds us that it inevitably will!  The good news, it is possible to change, with persistence, practice, tiiiiiiiime and experience your brain and heart will get on board. I rely on the the phrase ‘trust the process’ and have to remind myself often when I get frustrated and feel like giving up and going back to my old ways. So I encourage you to do the same, trust the process and don’t give up before the magic happens!
