📝 Reflection
Numbers 11: 23
The the Lord said to Moses, “Has my arm lost its power? Now you will see whether or not my word comes true!”
Underlying complacency is the lure of self sufficiency. This is the real trap. We think it is all up to us, so we yearn to stay in our zone of contentment or go back to our comforting ways. We may saying things like “It is good enough, right? Or “Haven’t I done enough over here, I should just be satisfied and rest on my laurels”. I think there is also a fear underneath complacency and self sufficiency - a fear of weariness, too much, being overwhelmed when we think it is all up to us. Can’t you hear that underneath Moses words from the scripture I used yesterday. Moses has slipped into the trap of self sufficiency and he wants out, he know he can’t do it and yet he has forgotten his help from God momentarily and gotten complacent in his own self sufficiency.
Yesterday when we used the perspective of new brain science to see the additional practical wisdom we can glean from scripture. We can clearly see that redemption and change is a process and is hard and often not linear. God gifted us with free will and a powerful thinking machine called the brain, that is wired for survival and simultaneously also wired with awareness and for thinking about thinking and thinking about our higher purpose. We are complex beautiful and also dangerously sinful beings on our own. We are also reminded how much we are loved and we were also made in His image and that we are never alone! Phew!
If you are feeling discouraged, please don’t! This is meant to be an encouraging message that goes again the modern ‘self’ help movement. Even Moses who represents our ‘higher’ brain forgets and slips in to self sufficiency mode at times and the lure of ‘the good old days’, he is fully human after all just like us. And yet God responds to his despair and with understanding and reminds him that His Spirit was upon him. He reminds him - you are not alone, you have me and I have not limits I am The Lord Your God. He further demonstrates this by directing him to gather seventy men and saying that he will also put His spirit upon them and hey will share the burden. (in my own words paraphrased Numbers 11:16-18)
What can we further learn from this? Several things for me personally and I hope for you. As a peacemaker by nature the lure of the trap of complacency is strong!! Like - I am not kidding, imagine a comfy chair with a strong magnetic pull following me around hovering constantly inviting me to just take a break, take it easy ‘you’ve done enough’. I think this message is for me personally. Don’t wait until you get overwhelmed to ask for help. If you feel yourself thinking it is all up to you and any success that you have had was accomplished by you by yourself in and of yourself, then that is a slippery slope to the quicksand of complacency. Defined as contentment or self-satisfaction, often combined with a lack of awareness of pending trouble or controversy. Often we (I) also think that success in one area of life gives me ‘permission’ to be complacent in other areas. This should be a red flag internally that I am too ‘self’ reliant and not allowing God’s provision to permeate my entire being’ness’. We must not forget that we have a God that loves us and is for us, and we must not forget how powerful his arms are!
