No judgement zone here, all are welcome, we are all on a spiritual journey because we are after all spiritual beings having a human experience.
📝 Reflection
Mark 15: 16-19
The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters and called out the entire regiment. They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head. Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!” And they struck him on the head with a reed stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.
I can imagine for many of us if not most reading the full account of Jesus’s crucifixion are horrified not just by the physical pain he endured but the emotional pain, the pain that comes from being mocked. As humans being mocked or even the threat and or fear of being mocked is powerful and it keeps us in ‘check’. We have such a deep need, not just a desire to belong that we will do awful things to belong and avoid being mocked. You don’t have to look further that our prisons to see this evidence. We will join in harmful destructive behavior that harms ourselves and others to avoid being mocked.
What Jesus understood about this is that it in being willing to go through the humiliation of being mocked that it actually gave him great power. Not only him but to his followers and still does today, if we choose to use it. The mockers of Jesus ended up being mocked in the end. When we get mocked and we are able to get our ego out of the way, we can see that we are causing fear in another. Mocking is evidence of fear. Contrary to what your ego might try to tell you, it does’t actually hurt you. We do have choice in how we receive and perceive it.
I invite you to do an experiment. If you can take a few days to just notice and observe yourself and others in regards to mocking that we pretty frequently engage in with each other. All you have to do is turn on the ‘news’ or social media and you see it everywhere. But even in our family’s and community’s it is often disguised as sarcasm. See how we use it - even subtlety to send messages to each other to be ‘careful’, ‘get back in line’, ‘you are not making me/us happy or comfortable’…. See if you can exert some self control and stop yourself from commenting, reacting, defending. Also, notice how much internal mocking you do to yourself.
It is so interesting when you can just put yourself into a position of just observing the ego. This is easier said than done, as you might imagine. Ask your self some questions and maybe even journal about it. Why does mocking feel so threatening? What are you afraid will happen. What is so bad about being ‘wrong’ about something, being seen as ‘foolish’, having a lower status, having less money, or having less?
Feelings and others feelings towards us don’t actually hurt unless we let it. What if we saw it for what it really is, a lashing out of someone who is feeling fear and feeling threatened themselves. Notice this in yourself today, and sit with it vs acting on it. Allow yourself to be mocked and see if you can receive the power of being free from being affected. When your identity is found in God and in love, you are freed from people pleasing. That will frustrate many, but it will also inspire and bring many into being curious about what you have that they don’t. Practice giving yourself a ‘power pause’. One of my favorite sayings is “just because you get invited to a party doesn’t mean you have to go’.
