📝 Reflection
Mark 5: 33-34
Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.”
In Mark chapter 5 verses 21-43 we have 2 stories intertwined together, which in and of itself is very interesting and I think very intentional, and is a representation of what faith and love do when it is intertwined and involved. It starts of Jesus with a large crown gathered around him, then a leader of the local temple Jairus coming to Jesus begging him, by falling at his feet, to heal his 12 yr old daughter who is dying. Jesus went with him and the crowd followed.
In the crowd we are introduced to a woman who has been suffering for 12 years with constant bleeding. She has spent all of her money, gone to all the doctors and nothing has helped in fact it has gotten worse. In a desperate attempt she thought to herself if I can just touch his robe, I will be healed. So she did that, and immediately she could feel in her body that she had been healed. Jesus felt the power go out of him and he stopped and asked ‘who touched my robe?’ It says that the crowed was pressing around him and his disciples were very curious how can you even tell, ‘how can you even ask this question, who touched me?’ I thought the same thing, aren’t there a lot of people touching him and touching his robe? Then this woman probably thinking she might be in trouble, confesses and he calls her ‘daughter’ and says ‘your faith healed you’ and sends her in peace.
While he is still talking messengers arrive to deliver the sad news that Jairus’s daughter has died. Jesus heard them and reassured Jairus ‘Don’t be afraid, just have faith’. Jesus goes with Jairus, Peter, James and John to Jairus’s house. He encounters a scene of much sorrow and weeping and wailing and he ask ‘why so much weeping, the child isn’t dead she is just asleep. With her mother and father in the room and the three disciples he grabbed her hand and said ‘little girl, get up’. She stood up and walked around and he left, as he was leaving he said give her some food.
Ok, there is so much here embedded in this story. I noticed the mention of 12 years twice, the juxtaposition of a mother and woman who suffered 12 years and is then is called daughter and a 12 year daughter who is dying and a fathers love. Both the father and the woman with the bleeding condition were at Jesus’s feet with faith and seeking from a position of desperation and love. One out of love for his daughter, a fathers love another who is probably starving for love. She was considered unclean with her condition and probably had to live very cut off from her loved ones. The daughter being dead when Jesus grabbed her hand would have also been considered unclean.
They could only be cleansed, healed and saved by true love, and they had faith in that. That is so powerful, I am not sure I can do it justice, I will just let it speak for itself. That is what love does, true, pure fatherly agapé love. It cleanses, heals and restores the fullness of life.
P.S. Looking up the significance of the number 12 it signifies perfection and God's power and authority
