📝 Reflection

  Matthew 7: 12

“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”

Welcome to the New Testament!! So exciting! This marks just over half a year that we have been walking through the Bible daily together! Congratulations, way to go!🎉 I love also how the thread in Malachi is picked up in Matthew, even more than 400 yrs later. We are getting to the heart of the matter, which is our hearts and the spirit and essence of the Law. Jesus comes to fulfill the law not abolish it. In chapter 5 vs. 18 he says “I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.”

In the Golden Rule which most of us know since it has made its way into secular and common use, we are told this right here is the essence of the law: do unto to others as you would have them do unto you. A few other versions that I find myself saying are; ‘what goes around comes around’ or ‘you get what you give’.  Yikes, we need to be careful, but sadly we aren’t always. Right on the heels of the Golden Rule is the concept of the Narrow Gate, in Matthew 7: 13-14 “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell (road to destruction in other translations) is broad, and its gate is wide for the the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few every find it.”

Putting these two concepts together - the narrow gate is being able to ‘genuinely give love and kindness to others forever’ - narrow is the gate AND the road is difficult and both are hard to find. Have you heard about the analogy of orange juice, when it is squeezed you get orange juice, the same is true for you what ever is on the inside will come out. The narrow gate is your own heart within. Are you full of genuine unconditional love?  I know I am not. I am working on it, and this verse is true, it is narrow and hard to find and once I find it, I won’t be let loose it a pasture where I can just roam around full of love. I am going to have to continue to work to find and stay on the path.

No wonder we need Jesus, his Holy Spirit, prayer,  to read and meditate on God’s word daily; even with these it seems nearly impossible. Yet we are given hope that a few of us may find it💖. I know that even in the searching, trying and seeking good stuff is also bound to happen. It certainly has turned life into a daily adventure for me personally. Challenges while exhausting are also exhilarating, they stretch you and grow you, and this ripples out to everyone around you. This is called the butterfly effect.

The 🦋butterfly effect is: a property of a chaotic system by which small changes in initial conditions can lead to large-scale and unpredictable variation in the future state of the system. The butterfly effect is based on the assumption that the world is intricately interwoven and connected, one small change way over ‘here’ can affect something on a much larger scale in a seemingly unrelated way, way over ‘there’. Jesus is a great example of this himself, he was one man who changed the world forever, he changed how we measure time and record history. He changed everything, even for those who don’t acknowledge his divinity.

In the positive psychology world, we like to use the quote ‘small hinges swing big doors’. As it relates to the Golden Rule a little love can go a long way. Love is a powerful emotional energy. It is the life force, you often hear it said that God is love. He proved it by giving the ultimate sacrifice, his Son. Let that soak in, receive it, feel it, share it. If you are not a believer in God or Jesus, think of someone you have genuine love for, savor that for a few moments, really feel the love. Do you feel more energized now? Can you go out and show some love to someone else, maybe even to someone who doesn’t ‘deserve’ it? Who knows maybe you will change the world with one simple act of love. Then repeat this everyday. The quickest way to get yourself out of a funk and into a better headspace is to reach a hand out to someone else. Isn’t this what you would want someone do for you?
