📝 Reflection

Continuing to unpack the story of the Daughters of Zelophehad. I can’t help but think about Zelophehad himself and the love he must have had for his daughters. The respect he also had as a member of the clan. These things gave credibility to the daughters and their petition and claim for land ownership. The daughters received his love directly.  The community must have also watched this family and the evidence of the fathers love of his daughters. It must have stood out and was uncommon for this time period and culture. In Numbers 36: 2 he is referenced again, “Sir, the Lord instructed you to divide the land by sacred lot among the people of Israel. You were told by the Lord to give the grant of land owned by our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.”  He must have been a prominent and well respected member of the tribe to be referred to as brother. The first mention of his name in Numbers 26 also mentions that he has no sons, but has daughters and then lists their names.

Milcah, Tirzah, Noah, Hoglah and Mahlah must have been adored and poured into by their father. He had to have believed in them and helped them to believe in themselves and in their own value and worth. To be set apart this way in this community. That they were able to have the confidence and credibility to stand before Moses, the priests, tribal leader and entire community, because of this strong foundation of identity that their father provided. Their mother is not mentioned, but I imagine she must have been quite a role model as well.  They knew who they were because of whose they were! Their father was a man of faith and likely poured into and helped them lay their firm foundation of whose they were in God first and secondly as his daughters.  Not all of us are lucky enough to have earthly fathers that pour into us this way, but we all have our Heavenly Father who does.  I think this story is a metaphor of this.

This family was strong and united in their identity and faith in God which bonded them to each other and provided encouragement to be uncommon. The end of Numbers also tells of the consequences for the sisters and all women property owners. Their ancestral inheritance must stay in the ancestral tribe. So they must either abide by the marriage restrictions that are place on women property owners or give up their land.  I think God also has metaphorical story for us here as well. When we choose to belong to Him we have to stay within His boundaries and guidelines. This is actually the path to true Freedom.  Their identity was solid and what land ownership meant to them and what they stood for was worth the consequences and staying with in the laws to maintain ownership and their identity.

I know not everyone reading this is a believer and that is ok, but I would invite you to be curious about this anyway and the allow yourself to imagine the difference that God’s love can make in your human experience of life. How motivating His Love can be, how much strength, confidence and reassurance can be found in this firm foundation. It can sustain you and give you supernatural endurance in your journey with seeking freedom from ‘over ….. ing’ - over drinking, over eating, over shopping, over functioning, over people pleasing, over numbing….
