 Day 22 -take Courage

📝 Reflection

Numbers 27: 1-4

One day a petition was presented by the daughters of Zelophehad- Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcas and Tirzah. Their father, Zelophehad, was a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joesph. These women stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the tribal leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tabernacle. “Our father died in the wilderness,” they said. “He was not among Korah’s followers, who rebelled against the Lord; he died because of his own sin. But he had no sons. “Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan just because he had no sons? Give us property along with the rest of our relatives.”

Wow - talk about taking courage. What a courageous example these women of God were!  So much going on here. These sisters had some chutzpah.  I looked this word up - it means audacity, confidence, nerve, guts.  I am going to take some courage from their story and example.  They didn’t beg, they didn’t plead, they confidently staked their claim and demanded property ownership. Women at this time were not allowed to be property owners, land was passed down through men in families and clans.  Their is also an element of timing, seizing the moment or a unique opportunity that they recognized.

I can just imagine them having a conversation among themselves prior to this. Getting on the same page and presenting a strong unified front was probably a process. Would have loved to be a fly on the wall in that tent! They must have all arrived eventually at the same conclusion and been in agreement with the question they were really asking themselves- we have an opportunity here what have we got to lose? Now or never! Their courage not only changed their lives, but it changed their families lives for generations to come and for (wo)mankind!

What is stirring in your heart, what opportunity has presented itself to you that you know that you need to take courage and say yes to?  There is a cost to waiting, the moment may pass by, the opportunity may slip away. Play the movie forward, what might happen if you take courage and boldly stake your claim and say yes and do the thing, how could your life change, what could be the ripple effects to those you love and out beyond for the common good?

To continue the story: Numbers 27: 5-11

So Moses brought their case before the Lord. And the Lord replied to Moses, “The claim of the daughters of Zelophehad is legitimate. You must give them a grant of land along with their father’s relatives. Assign them the property that would have been given to their father.

And give the following instructions to the people of Israel: If a man dies and has no son, then give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. but if his father has no brothers, five his inheritance to the nearest in his clan. This is a legal requirement for the people of Israel, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

I share this whole story because I know it will speak to you uniquely. I am going to ask a metaphorical question based on the story for you to ask yourself. What do you need to take courage and claim? In stead of asking what you have to lose, but what do you have to gain and who else might benefit from your courage?
