📝 Reflection
Habakkuk 2: 4-8
“Look at the proud! They trust in themselves and their lives are crooked. But the righteous will live by their faithfulness to God. Wealth is treacherous, and the arrogant are never at rest. They open their mouths as wide as the grace, and like death, they are never satisfied. In their greed they have gathered up many nations and stalled many peoples. But soon their captives will taunt them. They will mock them, saying, ‘What sorrow awaits you thieves! Now you will get what you deserve! You’ve become rich by extortion, but how much longer can this go on?’ Suddenly, your debtors will take action. They will turn on you and take all you have, while you stand trembling and helpless because you have plundered many nations, now all the survivors will plunder you. You committed murder throughout the countryside and filled the towns with violence.”….
I almost titled this ‘what goes around comes around’. As I was reading Habakkuk it struck me that he is a strategic thinker. He was looking critically at what was happening and the vision that God showed him of the coming destruction of Judah at the hands of Babylon. He took his ‘complaints’ to God. This kind of reminded me a bit of Job. His complaints were that it basically didn’t seem fair and that Babylon was just as bad as Judah if not worse and yet they were being 'rewarded' for their bad behavior by being used by God to take out Judah. ‘Why do they get to have victory and they are the bad guys?’
God reply’s to his complaints, by graciously saying listen carefully and ‘go get a pen and paper and take some notes’. Then he goes on to outline his greater strategy. He reminds Habakkuk that he doesn’t have the full picture, he can’t see all that God is orchestrating ‘behind’ the scenes. First of all he put principles and laws in place that humans stubbornly and hard headily and hard heartedly refuses to surrender to. So he can use who ever he wants for whatever purposes he choose for his grander plan. People and nations often take themselves out by their own arrogance, greed, pride, deception, vengeance, murder and on and on…
Our limited view and expectations of how justice is carried out is so short sighted. We live fairly short lives in a limited area, with exposure to limited people and situations etc. God is eternal and omnipotent. We really have no idea what is really fair or unfair in the bigger picture. We just need to live by his rules to the best of our ability and with deep abiding faith and we will be stronger for it.
This is strategic thinking turned into strategic living. If we do our best to live by God’s laws and principles we will get the good consequences of that and others will too. But good consequences, don’t necessarily equate to happiness, comfort and riches. Good consequences are genuine feelings of joy, peace, faith, trust even when things seem unfair, don’t make sense.
Humility is strategic, it is knowing there is a bigger picture and plan at work even when you don’t see it or understand it. God reminds Habakkuk of the Egyptians and the enslavement of his people and the eventual freedom and parting of the Red Sea. Using the same raging river to demonstrate his love, power and freedom He alone provides to his people and then immediately using those waters to take out the enemy of his people. I think he really appreciates Habakkuk’s mind and his questions, but responds by ‘watch and learn, you are thinking to small’…
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
How does this resonate with you? Are you thinking strategically? Are you thinking too 'small', too limited, too personally?
This is the ego's lack of true strategy, it is too self concerned to see beyond it's own nose and situation and how thing affect the self. Remember our acronym for EGO - Edging God Out - putting yourself in God's place.
