 Day 117- Slow is smooth

📝 Reflection

Proverbs 8: 22

The Lord formed me from the beginning, before he created anything else. I was appointed in ages past, at the very first, before the earth began.

In this particular chapter wisdom gets ‘personified’. I put quotes around personified, because this doesn’t quite do it justice, but so you can understand what I mean. Wisdom is an entity in and of it self and the very first ‘thing’ that God created. Vs. 30, goes on to say ‘I was the architect at His side’, His of course meaning God. Vs 31 ‘ I was his constant delight, rejoicing always in his presence and how happy I was with the world he created; how I rejoiced with the human family!’ WOW WOW WOW.

This just blew my mind. Thinking of wisdom as an entity or being and that it is foundational, primary, nothing goes well without that being foundational and FIRST -even for God himself in his creation process. Earlier in this chapter in vs. 12-16 it discusses wisdom being primary but with it you get a lot of secondary bonuses - good judgement, common sense, insight, strength, discernment. Wisdom does not pair with arrogance, price, corruption or perverse speech. This sounds like a no-brainer to me. I am seeking wisdom first from now on. I spent years seeking insight, common sense, being strong and I was able to achieve a certain level of these things, but in and of themselves they are not wisdom, so if I understand correctly you can have common sense and be prideful and NOT be wise.  So we might mistake these other characteristics for wisdom if we are not careful.

I recently learned of the of the nautical concept and Navy seal motto ‘slow is smooth and smooth is fast’. This saying is powerful and holds a lot of wisdom in such a few short words. This saying kept coming to my mind this morning as I was meditating on this chapter. I have lived a life up until just a few years ago that involved a lot of impatience, looking for short cuts, ‘good enough is good enough’, mediocrity, impulsiveness, aka foolishness. This foolishness caused a lot of drama and negative consequences, that I ignored and turned a blind eye too until I just got tired of my own shenanigans to put it bluntly. I was trying to have my cake and eat it too, thinking of myself as having good judgement but being arrogant because of it, feeling strong because I had ‘survived’ so much and feeling prideful and deserving because of it. Just because I had a few examples of certain ‘good’ characteristics that I demonstrated and tapped into at times which led to a pretty good life, does not mean I was wise. But I think in our culture today, this can easily be mistaken and we can fool ourselves.

What does the phrase mean ‘slow is smooth and smooth is fast’? It means that if you take your time, make sure things are done correctly, with care, with precision. Once things are going smoothly, then you are able to moving quickly, efficiently with little effort.  Taking the time to seek true wisdom, which is the healthy fear of God and following his instructions, this will deliver the by products of good judgement, discernment, insight, strength, common sense. All of this takes time, because it also takes practice, experience, calmness, thoughtfulness, mindfulness. Seems to me if I can take the time to seek, learn, earn and acquire some wisdom this will also ensure that I also get these other benefits, then life would become more smooth by default without a lot of drama and effort on my part.  If we hurry, look for too many shortcuts, do things half way- you get halfway, hurried results right? Trust the process, if you take more time on the front end, you will save yourself time on the ‘back’ end. If it works for the elite Navy Seals who execute some of the most complex and dangerous missions in the world, maybe we can use this wisdom too in our everyday lives?
