📝 Reflection
Isaiah 42: 18-20
“Listen, you who are deaf! Look and see, you blind! Who is as blind as my own people, my servant? Who is as deaf as my messenger? Who is as blind as my chosen people, the servant of the Lord? You see and recognize what is right but refuse to act on it. You hear with your ears, but you don’t really listen.”
Why do we do the things we know aren't good for us and that we don’t ‘want’ to do? The age old question every human struggles with individually and collectively. I am using the words self sabotage because that is what it looks like and those are the words we understand and that are frequently use to describe this conundrum.
When habits go from just fairly benign habits to a coping strategy a powerful chemical ‘linking’ takes place in the intelligence system that is us made up of our brains, nervous systems, heart and intestinal system. We talked the other day about how love and positive emotions create ‘feel good’ chemicals in your body. Those same chemicals can also get created in situations where you are eating a yummy bowl of ice cream 🍨, purchasing new cute shoes 👡or a having a glass wine 🍷after a stressful day to ‘take the edge off’. When your brain starts linking ⛓ this behavior with stress or ‘negative’ feelings as a solution to get the good chemicals flowing, that is when ‘self sabotage’ process begins.
Let’s look at it another way.. Humans are made to survive and thrive no matter what the conditions. We are adaptable, flexible, resilient, resourceful, and capable beings. We are pretty amazing and we are winners! No matter what situation we find ourselves in whether by our choice or not, we find a way to win and survive in that environment. We are always winning at the game we are playing! Think about it….
From this perspective we can understand that even in the most extreme circumstances why abused children or spouses choose to stay in or return to those circumstances even with the option to be rescued. They know how to do it. They don’t have the experience, evidence and confidence to know how to exist in another environment, they might not have done it yet or done it in a very long time. There is uncertainty whether they will ‘win’ in that new ‘better’ situation. We have quotes like “The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know” for a reason and that explain this phenomenon.
So now that we know what is going on, how do we do what we know is good or better for us when we are chained ⛓ now to this cycle. I use the words chained intentionally because that is what it can feel like, it can feel like you have no choice, or even when you wake up to it that you there is no certainty that it will be any better. When I say better I mean our brain is doing some ROI (return on investment) calculating. It is trying to decide if it is better ‘enough’ to make the effort and to do the work that it will take to make the new choices.
There is a gap between here and there. In tennis there is a place called ‘no mans land’ on the court. It is kind of like that. Who voluntarily wants to go to a place called ‘no mans land’ - and yet this is the place we must go through. Which is why we need to stay connected to like minded encouragers, guides, and resources that will keep us company during this phase of the journey, otherwise the temptation to return to where we were ‘winners’ will be too strong to resist.
This is also why we need to stay connected to our creator and the one who designed it all this way. This why in the Bible our prayer and faith life is compared to eating and drinking, we need to do it everyday and multiple times a day to survive and thrive. He will help you through ‘no man’s land’ too. Follow His instructions trust the creator of the process, He loves you. He will not and does not abandon you, He is there holding his loving hand out asking you to see, listen and act. This is the free will part - he won’t rescue you without your permission and cooperation. (read that again)
This is where you really get to feel like a winner who can have the strength to soar and to run, when you plug into His power and surrender to God’s ways. His ways are not your ways, they are better and they bring victory and life. Let Him help you break those earthly chains ⛓ and begin to experience true freedom has to offer.

Where are you in this process? How does this resonate? Are you being held captive by past events, certain tightly held beliefs, fears etc..?
