Day 182 - Self Importance

📝 Reflection 

Amos 6: 1-3

What sorrow awaits you who lounge in luxury in Jerusalem, and you who feel secure in Samaria! You are famous and popular in Israel, and people go to you for help. But go over to Calneh and see what happened there. Then go to the great city of Hamath and down to Philistine city of Gath. You are no better than they were, and look at how they were destroyed. You push away every thought of coming disaster, but your actions only bring the day of judgment closer.

 

This short book of Amos reminded me some of Proverbs, there is a whole lot of foolishness going on. We humans are pretty predictable. Same story different day or century 🤦‍♀️. We get caught up in our own lives, our own accomplishments and comfort that we don’t see the importance of God anymore.  Through our our own self importance we forget how important we actually are! Yep, read that again and ponder!

The creator of everything thought enough of you and me to create us, give us life, consciousness, free will - all the things! And still we get so caught up in our own doing or not doing that we think our lives are all about us.  We earned the money, we earned the title, we earned this and that. Or conversely some of us block blessings thinking we haven’t earned things, that is also a form of self importance. 

God is there just saying ‘receive’ what I am offering. Let me help. The image of being a mom of my kids when the were young and situations where they would stubbornly refuse even the little bit of help and exclaim “I DO IT, myself!”. They were blocking what was their to receive with love, and making life harder than it needed to be in that moment. I think we do the same thing.  

I know in our modern parenting we have parents who tend to over-parent or ‘hover’ parent and slow down and stunt their children’s development. God is not like this, he wants us to be interdependent, hard working and to pursue our desires. We just need to give credit where credit is due. Also he wants to co-create with us. He designed it that way.

So we go against natural laws and principles when we try to be fully separate and be independent, and in our self dependence and self importance we ‘push away every thought of coming disaster, but our actions only bring the day of judgement closer’ as the scripture above describes. 

We are limiting ourselves and the richness of the blessings God is wanting us to open our arms and hearts to receive, by thinking too much of our selves. If you are thinking too little of yourself you are doing the same thing. We receive by submitting ourselves to His sovereignty.

This is about God not about you or me. When you are full of self importance you are putting yourself in a small box and saying ‘Thanks anyway God, but I think I got this or I don’t deserve it! Peace out!’ Just like my kids refused my help many times and amplified their own self importance. Why is it that we think prayer, seeking and receiving divine guidance is weird, weak or unnecessary?
