📝 Reflection
Isaiah 55: 1-2
“Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink - even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk- it’s all free!
Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food.
What is really being said here? I need to use one analogy to help explain another analogy to myself 🤣. This morning my reading started at Chapter 52 and the common theme I was picking up with is choices and consequences which is often how humans seem to learn best. Although we are being told here, that there is any easier way if we just trust what God says and do it, life will be easier and more enjoyable to us. But…no….
We don’t inherently trust this way, we need to learn and experience things for ourselves. Especially if it conflicts with our ‘common’ sense or what our senses are telling us that we want or need in the moment. We choose to deal with the consequences later, convince ourselves that ‘that won’t happen to me’, I will be careful, etc… In Isaiah 52: 4-5 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Long ago my people chose to live in Egypt. Now they are oppressed by Assyria. What is this? Asks the Lord. “Why are my people enslaved again?…”
Of course people don’t consciously or knowingly choose to be enslaved and make things hard for themselves, but yet we often resist the free wisdom of not only God but others who have gone ahead of us in their own journey through the school of hard knocks. I am one ofthese people!🙋♀️ I had to learn the hard way with my health. As a child and young person I had an amazing metabolism and ‘natural’ athleticism. So I took full advantage, I ate and drank whatever I wanted and how ever much I wanted without any fear or concern of the future. It was so easy for me to lose a pound or two if I wanted so I wrongly assumed that this would be a life long trait for me. Which was true, until it wasn’t ….
This might not be your particular school of hard knocks, but likely you have your own alma mater you have ‘graduated’ from that has come at a high price and very expensive. Maybe your education has come in the area of relationships, financial concerns, career or work consequences, spiritual, health, education etc.. We all have our hard earned and very expensive educations, and hopefully we have learned and made some changes for the better from this school, maybe we are still in the process of learning.
God is trying to tell us - hey - 👋 - hello… when you are ready and tired of working so hard and ‘spending’ your precious life resources learning the hard way come on over here and try it my way - hey its even free!! You just have to trust me and give me some of your time, heart, energy focus and trust me…have a little faith… give me a chance let me me help you. After we exhaust ourselves from doing it the hard way, some of us, choose to surrender and give it a try. 💖 Then we are amazed and humbled and overwhelmed with His grace and mercy and unending patience. We can’t get it until we get it…
Then we read the Bible and understand that he has been telling us all along, and we have just chosen to go our own way…It is not easy to go His way, but it is simple, but we often won’t accept it until we have learned the hard way. Then we realize it is all a choice, even when we feel like there isn’t a choice, there is always a choice.
