📝 Reflection
Matthew 28: 2-4
Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint.
This verse really captured my imagination this morning, not just for what it is talking about with Jesus’s resurrection but for my own. I have buried things and puts guards at the door to make sure they didn’t come out. But there are moments that feel like what is described here where you know it is time to rise up and shine! It is time to let was has died and been buried inside of you to come life and be resurrected!
God has planted things inside of you; holy desires, holy abilities, holy talents and interestingly enough in our desire to be good and holy sometimes we hide those things away. Time to roll away the stone, and recognize those moments when you have that glowing knowing. We have a choice in that moment, go back to sleep, keep things hidden or wake up. It is easy to type this but it is not easy to actually do. I chose to keep going back to sleep and staying hidden and staying in my dysfunction and coping strategies. So no finger wagging from this one.
I am still very much figuring it out. I think this human life is a cycle of dying to self in order to be made new and reborn and resurrected continually. For many we convince ourselves that things are the way they are and our holy dreams and desires are just not meant for us, just for other people. We are afraid, ashamed, guilty, ‘modest’, proud so many things. We are sometimes pressured from loved ones to stay the same so that we don’t threaten them. We humans love certainty and predictability. Jesus came to show us that is not where true life is found. True life is found in the mystery and the pursuit of becoming who God created you to be.
Interestingly things start happening when you ‘come out of the grave’, you start to come alive in ways you never even anticipated or thought of. In Chapter 27 there was an interesting verse that isn’t quoted much, after Jesus gives up his spirit and the curtain was torn in tow and the rocks split and the earth shook- vs. 52 “and the tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead.” You might call me a heretic but as I was thinking about all of this I wonder if this is one of the symbolic meanings of this collective rising from the dead - this also happens within in us when we say yes to God and we die to ourselves. We come alive and other dormant parts of us also come back to life….
One thing I am sure of is that God loves me and he loves you. I am not a broken irredeemable sinner and neither are you. God is Love, he wants us to bury our fear, shame, our not ‘enoughness’ and receive our God given new life giving agape Love - the price? You and what you cling to and find your identity in that is outside of you. God is within you and you are within him, this is fulfilling satisfying Holy love.
