Exodus 21: 28-30
'“If an ox gores a man or woman to death, the ox must be stoned, and its flesh may not be eaten. In such a case, however, the owner will not be held liable. But suppose the ox had a reputation for goring, and the owner had been informed but failed to keep it under control. If the ox then kills someone, it must be stoned, and the owner must also be put to death. However, the dead person’s relatives may accept payment to compensate for the loss of life. The owner of the ox may redeem his life by paying whatever is demanded. '
Continuing on in my reading of Exodus (21) this morning, what caught my attention (Holy Spirit) is the guidelines given to owners of ox. They are getting to the heart  of the owner here. If you own an ox and you know that your ox could be dangerous - the Bible uses the word reputation here. The ox has demonstrated that it is a potential hazard or danger to people (risk), but the owner the owner fails to keep it under control what is the consequence? The owner obviously had to make a calculated decision in this process before damage, injury or death occurs. The owner had knowledge that there could be a future problem (risk) vs the certainty of being with out a prized asset that is helping support himself and his family (reward).
I can certainly identify with the dilemma, can’t you?
We make calculated decisions like this all the time! We can certainly rationalize (rational-lie), justify, deny, fool ourselves, delay our decisions. Roll the dice  . What really struck me, convicted me was how easily our  ’s can be outsmarted by our  ’s. When we know better and we don’t do better and we begin using these mental gymnastics and isn’t this really where the trouble begins and where we begin to feel trapped, enslaved, ensnared by our desire for perceived or real immediate rewards vs the unknown and uncertain chance that the things will go really bad, we can really convince ourselves that things really aren’t that bad or dangerous and the likely hood of this or that happening isn’t very great.
But the judgment guidelines are pretty clear - if you know better and you don’t do better - this is the problem. When that ox owner knows he has a beast with a bad reputation that now he has to put extra effort in to controlling it and he is taking a risk everyday he owns that ox that if he loses control he can lose everything. I can imagine that tension, that war within that he must feel. Do I give this beast up and almost certainly cause a problem to myself and my family financially in the short term while I have to figure this out or do I just keep trying harder to maintain control and keep my fingers crossed that I don’t lose control of this beast and hopefully avoid uncertainty - but in my heart I know that I or someone else could be injured or die as a result of this choice and I don’t act on this knowledge, this is a problem.

Even though I have been able to break the chains of many of my old habits, I still have many more chains  to break . I am pursuing a life of radical freedom how about you?
