John 18: 37-38
Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize what I say is true.” “What is truth?” Pilate asked….
What a great question… one that they just leave for us to answer for ourselves. What is truth? The truth is that in today’s modern age we are all encouraged to live according to our own ‘truth’. How is that working for us? How is that working for you? I know my truth wasn’t working out very well for me. The truth was I needed help! The truth is I need help e.v.e.r.y.day! The truth is everything and the truth is I know nothing fully on my own! The Bible tells us repeatedly that we can’t handle the full truth, it would break us, it would blow our minds, it is too glorious for us to comprehend. That is why often times we have to get our brains out of the way to allow the spirit of truth to come in and help us understand in a way our brains can’t.
What is really interesting in this chapter is that we are given the story of Simon Peter denying Jesus three times. Jesus foretold about this back in John 13:38. Peter told Jesus right before that that he was ‘ready to die for him’. In the previous Gospels we are told that Peter denies this after the prediction is made, because he couldn’t fathom that it could be true. So was he telling the truth? See how subjective truth can be. He absolutely believed that he was telling the truth, and yet it was Jesus who was actually telling the absolute truth. 🔍
Human’s are very self deceiving, though most of the time it is not intentionally. There are other examples that are often found in the world of ‘facts’ and ‘science’. How often have you heard the latest scientific facts, that have been ‘proven’ reliable only to be told a few years later how wrong it was?!? We often don’t have the full information to know the ‘full truth’. We are all just doing the best we can with what we have at the time. Some intentionally lie, manipulate and use the truth as a justification to bend things to their own reality and agenda’s. This is exactly what the Pharisees and leaders of Jesus’ time were doing. They believed they were on the side of truth. It is easy for us thousands of years later and sit in judgement. But many are acting exactly like modern day Pharisees, thinking that they have cornered the market on the ‘truth’.
I think the truth is that we will all get to the other side of this life and all say “Wow, I was totally wrong about that!” How many ‘truths’ are you believing about yourself, your life and others that might have been formed in your younger years based on a partial set of facts? Our brains are meaning making machines, and when we don’t have all the facts it will fill in the gaps and make a lot of assumptions to make things make ‘sense’.
The truth and the realization that we know nothing is everything and it is the truth, and it will bring you to your knees. Which is what happens in vs. 6; “‘As Jesus said I Am he,’ they all drew back and fell to the ground!” Surrendering to the spirit of truth, allowing the seeds of truth to be planted, then stepping up in faith and nurturing them, tending, nourishing it and allowing the truth to grow in you through faith in action is the only path to the truest thing we will ever know on this side of heaven. At least that is the truth I am clinging to. “There is no other way but to trust and obey..🎶..”
