Day 244 - Spirit of Truth

📝 Reflection
John 16: 12-15
““There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’”
In this chapter Jesus is telling his disciples about the Holy Spirit that will be coming. He refers to it as the spirit of truth and the advocate. This is so encouraging, but also possibly challenging. He says it will be available, not just a given or an automatic thing bestowed. You will have to do something to access it. When I think of the word spirit and how it is often used, I think of the essence of something. The definition according to oxford is: the non-physical part of a person that is the seat of emotions and character, the soul, also a person’s mood, attitudes or intention, the meaning of intention behind something as opposed to its strict verbal interpretation. I think this last definition is what should be convicting or challenging because it requires non-dualistic thinking, or the ability to discern in the ‘grey’ areas of life.
Many people are black and white, this or that, good or bad, either/or, or aka dualistic thinkers. The mark of wisdom I think is to be able to grow beyond this type of thinking. This is the kind of thinkers, dualistic, that the Pharisees and the religious teacher are being accused of by Jesus. But the only way access the Spirit of truth, is through non-dualistic thinking, and maybe even set thinking aside all together, just allowing yourself to know, ‘be still and know’. It is available through belief in Jesus. As we can see from the New Testament and the Gospels, those who cannot expand or grown into non-dualistic thinking have trouble believing in Jesus.
Prior to reading this, this morning I had a restless night of sleep and was awake from approximately the hours of 2:30 am to 4:30 am. As I was tossing and turning I was also praying and asking God to help me with my overthinking mind and to help me understand why I have been restless lately. He gave me an insight from some stored memories that allowed me to see a pattern that had played out pretty consistently in my life on a very cyclical basis. I am telling you my spirit knew that this was true. I took time to go back over and inventory and catalog events and sure enough, it always happens in summer/fall time nearly every year. My body has been trying to tell me, but my mind didn’t understand. I have dealt with this by doing things repeatedly trying to soothe and solve this restlessness. They work for a time and then it happens again.
Now I have been doing a lot of ‘self’ healing ❤️🩹 work for a few years now, and it is really paying off. It is slow going at times and it seems like nothing is happening. I call this the ‘in between’. There is usually a lot going on in my spirit during this time that just needs to work its way through my whole system; the body, the mind, the spirit, the gut, nervous system etc.. But I know this break through was some truth that my mind was finally ready to receive and integrate because I fell back asleep almost immediately and slept until almost 7 am, which I haven’t done since for over a year! My restlessness went away, my nervous system calmed down and I was able to peacefully go back into deep sleep.
So to even wake up and read John 16 this morning was just further confirmation and a sweet love letter from God himself through his son Jesus who left me an advocate within to help me continue to heal. Thank you sweet Jesus!
John 16: 20-24
“I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy. It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world. So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.”
