📝 Reflection
John 19: 6-14
“When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” “Take him yourselves and crucify him,” Pilate said. “I find him not guilty.” The Jewish leaders replied, “By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever. He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer. “Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?” Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you release this man, you are no ‘friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.” When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement (in Hebrew, Gabbatha). It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people, “Look, here is your king!””
Evidently God wants me to receive some truth because here we are on day 4 of talking about truth, I have a feeling this isn’t the end of it either 😉. As I put myself into the scene and drama of Jesus being tried and then crucified, I can’t help but feel a bit of sadness for Pilate and the position he was in. He seems to sense the truth of who Jesus truly is. He is finds him innocent, but his back is pushed up against the wall with the Jewish leaders and their threat to use this opportunity to frame him as a rebel against Caesar if he doesn’t capitulate. He even has this intimate moment where he pulls Jesus back into his headquarters for a conversation after he hears that he has claimed to be the Son of God.
I wonder if Pilate had a moment of realization of the truth, he pleads with Jesus to help himself. ‘Help me help you’ you can hear him say. Jesus’ only response is ‘the only power you have is given from above’. Pilate must on some level realize the role he has been assigned in a story that is much larger than he is able to see. He once more tries to release Jesus, but to no avail..
He then has a sign made written in three languages; Hebrew, Greek and Latin that says Jesus of Nazareth ‘King of the Jews’. The priests demand that he change it to “He said ‘I am King of the Jews’”. But Pilate responds, I have written what I have written’. As I am typing this maybe I should have called today ‘signs of truth’- that would have been good! The signs were sure all around.
As Jesus is dying on the cross he sees his mother and John looking on. He says to them, ‘Dear woman here is your son’ and to John ‘here is your mother’. Remember back when Jesus started his ministry and one of the first examples he uses when debating with the priests and religious leaders is to point out how they themselves don’t obey the commandments because they don’t ‘honor their mother and father’. One his last acts before dying is to honor his mother. Do you sense the truth of what is happening of who Jesus truly is?
Since the next day was the sabbath and Passover they wanted to hasten the deaths of those being crucified. To do this they were going to break the legs of the men. When they go to Jesus, he was discover to already be dead. To make sure he was dead they pierced his side and blood and water poured out. This fulfilled all of the scriptures about him “Not one of his bones will be broken and they will look on the one they pierced.” Why do we doubt when there are so many details that were predicted about him that proved to be true? We doubt a lot of things even when there is evidence even when we sense it. Why because usually we are afraid.
The other point I would like to bring to our attention for consideration, is about him being pierced. Symbolically this might represent the way a seed also has to be pierced in order to bring forth it’s full potential. I can’t claim this idea for my own, as I was researching another item mentioned in the passages, the hyssop branch, I ran across someone else mention this. But it is so interesting, isn’t it? Also, that blood and water flowed out. Sacrificial blood and living cleansing water. Both are essential for human life. Lots to ponder, can’t wait until tomorrow as we finish the book of John.
