📝 Reflection
John 17: 20-23
“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one - as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me that you love them as much as you love me.
Once again, I think we get some clues in the beginning of this chapter on how to interpret and read this complicated chapter. Jesus starts off talking about himself in the third person 📝. v2 “Father the hour has come; glorify your son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him (ESV) . I think we can insert our names here too. Read it that way and see how it feels! We have been given authority over our flesh and we can receive eternal life here and now! Before you put this down and decide I am a heretic, here me out.
When we go further into the chapter to the verses I have quoted above we get what appears to be circular logic. As I pondered and meditated on this and tried to think of an example in nature that has this type of relationship to itself - it is the seed. A seed has the full potential of the plant, tree or animal within it. That potential can’t be actualized or realized with out the right conditions. If some of the conditions are good, some potential might be realized and growth might happen, but there might be some weakness, vulnerability to disease etc. But still even a plant or animal that isn’t fully actualized to its highest potential can still reproduce. But often the characteristics, environment and conditions that affected or limited that thing reaching its full potential will also likely get passed on.
If conditions are good and the living thing cultivated, nourished and tended to properly it can become all it is meant to be. That will also likely get passed on as well to its offspring. Living things that are nourished and loved tend to thrive this gives glory back to the creator and the nurturer. We are told that we are loved by God as much as he loves Jesus. But we have to be actively engaged. Believing is receiving that love and living from that truth. This is how seeds of truth about anything grow, they are nurtured, cultivated, tended to so they can grow and become realized. When we believe in gravity we live accordingly and don’t walk off of tall structures without a safe way to get to the ground. When we believe in our spouses and love we live from that place and act accordingly and tend to our marriages. If we don’t then we start to have consequences.
So you see when you believe in something it requires that we act accordingly and that we by virtue of that set up the right conditions for growth. It takes time, attention, intention on a regular basis. Which is why the analogy of food and water is used so frequently as an analogy in our spiritual life. When you are able to fully receive and believe and live from a place of loving God, then you tend to also be freed up from your fears. Our fears tend to keep us focused on the past and/or the future. What is always something that exists? Now. Now is all there ever is. When you are spiritually mature, filled with love, able to receive and reflect Gods glory- does this not have you able to always live in the now? Could now be eternal?
God created the first and original versions of plants, animals and humans. Then that is all he did, he created a creation that recreates itself. This is amazing. The seed allows it to do that, but the conditions have to be present for the seed to start the process of becoming. Because humans have free will, cognition and spirits we also have responsibility in this process. Many of us limit our own potential and therefor God’s glory. Who do we think we are? Do you see how thinking too little of yourself also means that you think to little of your creator? When you don’t tend to yourself you are not tending to the Christ seed within? The spirit of truth will plant the seeds and help you tend it, it will not do it for you. You are not meant to be spiritually anorexic and malnourished. The evidence of this often shows up in our relationships, our bodies and our own mental and emotional health.
