📝 Reflection
John 7: 37-38
“On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’””
We have rivers of living water flowing through us already - it is called blood. Our bodies are such amazing machines that really replicate a lot of what we see in nature all around us. Our lungs take in air. Our capillary structure in our lungs are eerily reminiscent of trees. They take the oxygen from our breathing and send it over to our heart to process and send around to our organs and the rest of our body and then sift out the carbon dioxide and help us send it back out into the air where trees and other things benefit from it. Quite amazing, we literally are walking miracles and natural wonders of the world!
Now in the verse above it specifically says that Jesus is shouting or talking loudly depending on the translation that you read. This is not something that he does all that often. So he is really trying to project his voice, his breath and his message to the entire crowd that is listening. They have the choice to come to him in ‘thirst’ for truth and believe and receive his words which can be converted into living water by each heart who hears and understands.
Don’t let your brain and your logic get in the way it will try to interrupt and block this truth. We see this demonstrated by the Pharisees and even modern religious people today. Logic and reason will often blind us from ‘knowing’ things. Love, the heart and the spirit speak different languages and work on a different plane of knowing and truth. In fact back in vs 24 he says “Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.”” Think of someone you have chosen to love that is not related to you. The heart knows things the head does and can not. Or think of times when you are in conversation and you innately know when things are being said that are heart felt - we have language and words that describe this, but probably can’t really do it justice, but yet we know.
This is what Jesus is trying to get us to understand here and what God has to offer us. Also, when you have these kinds of connections with people you have to spend time with them. It takes time for the heart to know. We might get an immediate feeling when we meet some people but that is not what is being discussed here. That though may be the beginning of something, but you won’t know until you take time. I often remind myself that the journey from the head to the heart is a million miles, but maybe if we just got our heads out of the way it wouldn’t take so long!
What do you have to lose? Better yet, what do you have to gain? Give your heart a chance to say yes, it knows, it feels the truth. Trust it and step out in faith, satisfy your thirst.
