John 6: 16-20
“That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him. But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum. Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough. They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified, but he called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here!” Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!”
I am in awe everyday how much there is to unpack in the words of the Bible and that everyday there is something so profound and yet so practical that I discover. Truly in awe, e.v.e.r.y.d.a.y! This morning of course was no different. As I sat with the verses above, I realized how focused the disciples had to have been on Jesus in this scene. This takes place after the miracle of the loaves and fish and feeding the five thousand. They must have been exhausted. Jesus had withdrawn after being nearly mobbed. I think they must have been waiting for him, but then it started getting dark and they decided to head back on their own.
The sea or lake that they crossed the sea of Galilea is about 8 miles across. So this story says they got about half way across when a great wind came upon them and the waves got rough and then they see Jesus approaching them, walking on the water. They were afraid, he was walking toward them and reassured them. “Don’t be afraid. I am here!” Even though it says they were eager to get him on the board, it never actually tells us that he did. And then all of a sudden they are on the other side of the lake.
Even in the wind and the waves and with a long way still left to go on their journey they focused on Jesus and they got where they needed to go. They could continue to freak out or focus on the rest of their journey, we are only told that they are focused on Jesus and also conversely he is focused on them and he is reassuring them. It also says that they immediately arrived at their destination. Think about that.. seriously. This is super practical and profound. Also, the beginning of the story confirms this, they were focused on Jesus, but they got tired of waiting on him, they went ahead and then the winds and waves came…
Just after this profound tidbit Jesus went on to freak a lot of his followers out by telling them to eat his flesh and drink his blood for eternal life. Wait, what?! He lost a lot of followers after this. They could not understand or accept what he said. His core 12 stayed focused on him. He asked “Are you also going to leave?”“Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.””
They did not have to fully understand how it all worked, they just needed to understand that they just needed to stay focused on him. Now is all we have, now is eternal. When we stayed focused on Jesus, on love, on God, on the truth now, we have eternal life.
John 6: 47-51 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life. Yes, I am the bread of life! Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died. Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever: and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live is my flesh.”
