📝 Reflection
Luke 24: 15-16
As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. But God kept them from recognizing him.
The word recognition is interesting because it has a few different meanings depending on the context. The root word- cognition simply means a mental process. It is related to the word cognition which is middle english, and means compression or ability to comprehend. When you add the prefix ‘re’ to a word it means ‘again’, ‘in the matter of’ or ‘in reference to’. Recognition means - to acknowledge, to take notice of, to perceive to be something or someone previously known, to perceive clearly, special notice or attention. Another definition that I found really interesting and I think is what was taking shape in my mind as I was contemplating this chapter is: the sensing and encoding of a printed or written date by a machine. I think our brains along with our entire intelligence system work much like a machine. There is a sensing and encoding that we recognize at a level we can’t always articulate. That ‘inner knowing’, intuition, spiritual inklings, holy spirit moments, recognition that we just can’t quite explain.
In chapter 23 as Jesus is about to give up his spirit, the sun goes dark and the curtain in the temple is torn in half, the roman officer overseeing the execution immediately recognized who Jesus was and that he was innocent and began worshipping God immediately. Later after his body is wrapped in linen and placed in a tomb the women come to tend to his body and they find the tomb empty. There are men with brilliant robes saying, don’t you recognize what is happening, he has been telling you that this would happen. Even though they see the evidence they can’t quite ‘fully’ recognize what has happening and what is happening. It is so incredible their minds really can’t quite process, it is too ‘big’ to take in all at once. The recognition needs to take time in order for them to be able to ‘handle’ it.
The same is true for us, we think we want all the answers right away and we can spend a lot of time and energy in worry and anxiety. I am learning now to recognize this in myself and just allow myself to be in the uncomfortable unknowing that when I am ready to know, learn or recognize I will. This is easier said than done, but as I practice I am recognizing that this is a much better use of my energy and it is much more, dare I say.. fun, exciting and exhilarating when the recognition does come. I am in such awe and gratitude, I can only imagine what the women, the followers and disciples must have felt when they recognized the only reality that matters! Well I think we have an idea how they must have felt, it was a love and a truth worth staking their lives on. Many of them gladly became martyrs.
Practically speaking though, Jesus revealed himself when they were ready to receive it, and even then they still had a hard time. I love this exchange in vs 31-32 “Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! They said to each other, “didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?” They were able to retroactively recognize a feeling they were having. This is huge! This is mindfulness in action, they were paying attention and fully present with what they were feeling and sensing even though they couldn’t quite put their finger on it. They didn’t freak out, they didn’t get too caught up in it, they kind of ‘filed’ it away to pull out as needed.
This is why I thing the definition above that is about how a machine recognizes things is actually pretty accurate to the human intelligence processing system. In order for this to work properly for us we have to give it time and practice. This is what prayer, stillness, time in nature, meditation, journaling, story telling and/or reading, deep thinking, and deep conversations can do for you. These things all require intense focus and time. Exercise for the mind. I think the disciples did all of these things, which is why we even can read about it in their accounts in the Bible. I know the tendency in the past for me has been to distract and keep myself busy which is why I wasn’t recognizing A LOT of things in my life. I have finally learned the wisdom and the value of slowing down and taking time to do these things. It calms me, it focuses me and allows my human and spiritual intelligence systems to get in sync and talking to each other. I know that when I don’t know, it is ok, it is coming.. I will recognize ‘it’ when it arrives.
