📝 Reflection
Jeremiah 24: 4-7
Then the Lord gave me this message: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: the good figs represent the exiles I sent from Judah to the land of the Babylonians. I will watch over and care for them, and I will bring them back here again. I will build them up and not tear them down. I will plant them and not uproot them. I will give them hearts that recognize me as the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me, wholeheartedly.
In chapter 24 God again gave Jeremiah a vision of two baskets of figs. One basket filled with good figs, and the other with bad figs to rotten to eat. During my quiet time this morning, my mind was very noise and all over the place. I settled on this chapter because it seemed straight forward enough that even in my discombobbled state I though ‘i’ could come up with something useful to say. Well as usual and as the good and gracious God that he is, showed up and rescued me from my own limited understanding. My mind was able to settle a little and receive the following revelation, that I personally need right now.
So, I in my human wisdom was focused on the quality of the fruit as the moral of this story. While that is an important aspect, I think there is a lot more to this story. If we look at the context of the exile story as well. It is interesting that God is using exile as his provision and his plan of saving his people for their eventual return. Exile is usually understood by humans to be a bad or not good thing. It is even the ultimate for of punishment that we dole out to each other. Either in reality by actually sending someone off to another place with no permission to return without consequences, or we cut people off and excommunicate them. Remember a human’s core need and desire is to belong. I can imagine in our own minds that we will resist exile as the path to freedom and a good outcome- it is completely again our human logic.
Those that resisted God’s instructions and plan of exile are the bad or rotten fruit. Once again, God’s ways are not our ways. When we hold on to, try to control, live from our own understanding and force our own way we usually prevent or block what it is we actually desire. Those tuned into God’s heart, spirit and understanding are able to let go and move into a place where they know they will feel like an outcast, a stranger and exile in order to return to or go to an even better ‘place’.
Holding on tightly can actually be what exiles us to a point of no return and prevents us from getting the thing we actually want. God’s ways are not our ways. We have to surrender, trust and step out in faith into what might even seem like exile for a time. We have to let go in order to receive, gripping too tightly blocks the good fruit, it leads to a basket of bad fruit. If it is your way or the highway, God will take you up on that offer and let you go down the highway of your own destruction and you might also take others with you. There is a point of no return.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
Is there something in your life that you are clinging too, gripping tightly? Is God asking you to surrender and step out in faith in an area of your life?
