Day 41- Playing with Fire

📝 Reflection

 Judges 9: 13

“And the thornbush replied to the trees, ‘If you truly want to make me your king, come and take shelter in my shade. If not, let fire come out from me and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’”

I covered a lot of reading this morning in my daily reading plan chapters 6-16 of Judges. A lot happens in these chapters, and so many concepts and lessons. There was also a lot of fire’s mentioned in the stories and the use of fire in various settings, from war to the angel of the Lord, burnt offerings etc… When we even think of the word judgement, doesn’t fire often come to mind. The whole book of judges is about the judge system and the judgement of Israel. When they made the decision to not fully obey the Lord and get rid of all the people of the land and allowed some to remain, right then and there they made a decision to play with fire!

Fire when controlled and used with discernment and appropriately is a wonderful and useful thing. We can warm our homes with it, we can cook with it, we can forge and manipulate materials and tools with it, we can create using it etc…. Heck our life on earth depends on a ball of fire called the sun that is at just the right distance from earth to allow life to exist and benefit from.  If we were any closer we would burn, if we were any further we would freeze!  Fire is to be respected and harnessed for good, or it can destroy, consume and burn things up when out of control or used for evil.

This is a great metaphor for some of the aspects of our lives right? We think we can control somethings and before you know it, it is a raging out of control fire that is threatening to destroy our lives if we leave things unattended or ignored. We often willfully minimize or deny the potentially destructive nature of sin, even seeming small innocent things right? For example, Sampson was blessed and given the spirit of the Lord and the strength of 10 men and but he was weak in an aspect of his life, he was tempted by beautiful women that were ultimately his downfall. He played with fire and he got burned, bad!

The scripture above is a quote from Johtams Parable predicting the downfall of Abimelech and the people of Sechem. They were warned by Jotham that if they were dishonest and dishonorable towards the memory of Gideon in making Abimelech their king then they would consume each other with fire. First Abimelech would turn on the people of Sechem and then people would turn on Abimelech all with fire! That is exactly what happened. Metaphorically we can see that ‘your sin will find you out’!(Numbers 32:23). There is no escape from the consequences of your actions. We really need to be careful with playing with fire (sin), lest we get burned or consumed.

You don’t have to wait until you are destroyed or close to destruction by a habit or something in your life before you decide to make a change. But often and very unfortunately this seems to be human nature. We wait until the pain of what we are doing outweighs the pain of the process of changing or repentance.

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

Is there a fire in your life that you are ignoring or that you are intentionally denying the power of and are convincing yourself that you have control of it and are enjoying the cozy warmth it brings? Don’t play with fire, respect it!
