📝 Reflection
2 Kings 8: 11
Elisha stared at Hazael with a fixed gaze until Hazael became uneasy. Then the man of God started weeping.
This poignant moment really captured my heart ❤️🩹 this morning and really reassured me that it is ok to still be human. This week we have gone deep with a lot of big topics: the danger of veering off track, staying the course, burning the boats (going all in), having spirit of cooperation, and being an empty vessel (going all out). We are high achievers and go getters and God calls us to be all of that, but he also made us fully human. We have learned this week that we can’t do any of this ‘achievement’ on our own. We also can’t do it trying to be ‘robotic’ , too stoic or denying our humanity.
Take it from me, this was something I had to learn the hard way. If you don’t acknowledge your feelings or deal with them, they will deal with you! Feelings denied will come out sideways, will lead to bad habits that are hard to change, damage or even break relationships, isolate you, lie to you etc… Processing, allowing and feeling them as they come is healthy. It can feel vulnerable, very threatening or overwhelming in the moment, but it is much better now that later! Waiting only gives them a chance to grow and get even more out of control and even start controlling you and you might not even be aware and making those connections! The term ‘mid life crisis’ exists for a reason!
You might be like me and if you grew up in a dysfunctional home you might have also gotten the message that if you are good enough, pleasing enough, happy enough then everything is ‘fine’. Some of you might have learned to wall yourself off and disconnect and go into a world of your own. I was a mixed up mess of all of this. Looking fine on the outside, convincing myself I was fine and also isolating and putting walls up. For me no one would know I was isolating, my calendar was full of bible study groups, professional networking events, lunches with girl friends etc.. But I was only letting them in just enough to convince myself and them that we were connected. The real me was locked away like Repunzel in a tall tower where it was safe. This was a false safety though. Humans are meant to feel and connect, we were literally built for it. Disconnecting from yourself and others or hiding behind a false ‘its fine’ facade leads to destruction! All you have to do is look to the rich and famous and Hollywood to see the truth of this.
Vulnerability takes courage, giving yourself permission to be human takes courage, acknowledging your feelings and allowing them takes courage. I imagine the gravity of Elisha’s visions was overwhelming at times, as we see from this verse. He didn’t deny it, he allowed his feelings which allowed him to stay on course, go all in, cooperate with the spirit of God, go all out and stay focused and on mission. This is powerful and ‘right on time’ reminder for me this week. It has been a tough week in some areas of my own life where I have been wrestling with some feelings that in the past I wouldn’t have even allowed myself to acknowledge because ‘good girls’ don’t want things, get angry, hurt, have strong desires, get frustrated, sad or have big ambitions etc.. All lies of the enemy that kept me playing small in my own life.
Brene Brown who researches, measures and quantifies big concepts of humanness says that “Despite what some may think vulnerability is our most accurate way to measure courage, and we literally do that as researchers." She also says that “vulnerability allows them to assess fearlessness”. She also goes on to say ”We can measure how brave you are by how vulnerable you're willing to be.” I think the moment that we see illustrated above from Elisha demonstrates the truth of this so well.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
What lies are you believing? Are you giving yourself permission to be fully human and vulnerable? It might just be the thing you need to be truly courageous and go all in and go all out with your journey of transformation, with God and with life! Embrace your humanity, don’t deny it or keep it hidden away where you think it is not hurting you or anyone else. This is a lie! We need YOU - ALL of YOU! Broken messy and imperfect! We need each other collectively and connectedly, this is where life becomes and adventurous and magical, not always easy or fun, but fantastic and worth it!
