📝 Reflection

 Mark 7: 32-34

A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him, and the people begged Jesus to lay his hands on the man to heal him. Jesus led him away from the crowd so they could be alone. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then, spitting on his won fingers, he touched the man’s tongue. Looking up to heaven, the sighed and said “Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened!” Instantly the man could hear perfectly, and his tongue was freed so he could speak plainly!

Ok, so this scene is a little strange, to say the least. Jesus physically puts his fingers in a man’s ears and spits on his own fingers and then puts them in the man’s mouth. 🤔 Jesus is nothing if not intentional. So strange on the surface, but what he is showing us metaphorically is not so strange. Repeatedly in the Old Testament we are told people have eyes but can’t see, they listen but don’t hear etc.. This deaf and mute man was meant to represent our spiritual lives. We need the truth of Jesus to help us listen and hear, have a voice and use it to speak truth.

As I was sitting with this this morning, I did a little experiment and I put my fingers in my own ears. It is interesting that our fingers are perfectly sized to fit right inside, and they do a good job of blocking out all noise. Anyway, many of us spiritually do this to ourselves. We block out the truth, we rely on our senses and our logic and we they are telling us the truth. Our senses are so easily deceived and we block out a lot of important information. We are geared towards confirmation bias. Meaning we look for confirmation of what we already believe and what makes sense according to the stories we have told ourselves or have been told to us. So Jesus puts his fingers in this mans ears to represent blocking out what the man would hear from the world and inserts himself into the ear canals.

He is showing us that before we listen to what the world has to say and letting it shape our beliefs we need to see the truth and let the truth inform us of how we see and hear what the world has to say. We should allow truth to inform our speech as well vs reacting to the world and letting it form our words and speech. Truth should be on our tongue as soon as our mouth opens.

Earlier in the chapter, the story of Jesus walking on water was told. After Jesus feeds the five thousand the disciples are in the boat and struggling against the wind and waves and getting afraid. Then they see Jesus walking on the water toward them. They were scared and thought he was a ghost. He reassures them and says ‘don’t be afraid, I am here!’ Then climbs in the boat and the wind stopped. (52) “They were amazed for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were to hard to take it in.”

I am imagining that is was nearly impossible for their brains to process what they had witnessed with the feeding of the five thousand. Even though they saw it and experienced it did the trust it? Did they allow themselves to really believe it, did they find ways to explain it and make it make sense?  I know I catch myself doing the same thing when I read about it. Maybe somehow the bread was more filling than normal bread and they were satisfied by crumbs??  Then Jesus shows up walking on water in the middle of the night in the wind and the waves??  Wait what?  We are limited beings with limited senses, but we have the access to the penetrating truth and miraculous power of an unlimited God if we don’t block it with our senses.

How does this resonate with you? Can you open your mind and your senses enough to see & hear the truth, and let it penetrate?
