Join me on my morning walk as we rise and shine together by walking through the Bible daily and learn a practical applicable coaching nugget from the ultimate life coach - our creator (whatever that means to you). No judgement zone here, all are welcome, we are all on a spiritual journey because we are after all spiritual beings having a human experience.

📝 Reflection

 Isaiah 37:30

Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Here is the proof that what I say is true:  “This year you will eat only what grows up by itself, and next year you will eat what springs up from that.

But in the third year you will plant crops and harvest them; you will tend vineyards and eat their fruit.”

Man I am loving reading the Bible cover to cover as a rookie for the first time. The Bible is accessible to anyone at any stage. You don’t have to have gone to seminary to understand it or to get useful and practical teaching from it. This verse even reassures me of this - ‘I can eat what grows up by itself’. If I show up I will have something to eat even as a rookie. Now what I get from it next year maybe be even better and deeper as my understanding and capability grows and if I stick with it I can become a master bible reader and start to really grow some deep roots and plant crops of my own that will yield a harvest and bear fruit in the years to come.

So many examples come to mind. A toddler taking its first steps, so exciting but wobbly and lots of falling down, until the efforts yield more consistent results it can seem like a bit of random luck at first, right? If the child sticks with it, they realize hey it isn’t just luck, I can get this result if I just keep trying and putting one foot in front of the other. Then eventually, the steps get more stable and reliable, and then we are off to the races quite literally. Proficient walking leads to mastering walking which then allows us to add a harvest of new skills; running, skipping, and jumping.

My daughter is a jumper for her high school track team. She had to be willing to be new at this sport and endure a lot of practice and failing and then with consistency over time attaining higher and higher jumps. She just recently had a breakthrough a PR (personal record) at a meet. To her in her own mind, this wasn’t part of her own attitude and identity to be a master at this new height. She had to repeat it to know that she could really do it - does this make sense.

The path to mastery includes the willingness to be new and to be bad at something, to endure this process, but knowing that over time, with practice and patience proficiency will come and then mastery will come. Many of us are too impatience, we might be willing to endure the rookie stage of something because it is exciting and new, but we aren’t willing to be in the 2nd phase where the novelty as worn off, but we aren’t getting the ‘fantastic’ results of mastery. We get bored, or we think we aren’t good enough, we aren’t being consistent enough in our practice to not feeling like we are just getting lucky. Some of us are very talented and gifted and we rely on this alone thinking this will bring mastery.

It is the awkward middle, the 2nd year or phase where people often give up. If we realize this is part of the path though and the price of admission, then maybe we can hang in there and put in the 10,000 hrs as Malcom Gladwell puts it in his book Outliers. We think mastery is for the special for the outliers, but when you realize there are principles and a path that the masters were willing to go down, you realize they aren’t so special after all, just willing to be new, to fail, to just be ok and still show up even when the ‘thrill’ is gone, because they know that not only will the ‘thrill’ will return, but it won’t leave again. Life is a constant adventure for those on the path to mastery. They also realize that mastering is not a point of arrival but the journey itself is the reward, and the constant pursuit of one level of mastery to another, building upon itself.
