📝 Reflection
Matthew 10: 5-10
Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans, but only to the people of Israel - God’s lost sheep. Go and announce to them that the kingdom of Heaven is near. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Gives as freely as you have received! Don’t take any money in your money belts - no gold, silver, or even copper coins. Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sands or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed…”
These are just a few of the first marching orders that Jesus gave his 12 disciples. Doesn’t sound like something I or anyone would volunteer for, unless they were on a mission! Not just any mission, the ultimate mission. Having a mission and a purpose gives life meaning and allows you to do what might seem impossible at the outset. Jesus gave them his authority to do this. How can we take this message and apply it to ourselves in our everyday life and situations.
When you decide to live by a certain set of values, to be a person of a specific character with integrity you must treat it like it is your mission. Missions are not just desires and wants, missions are tasks, objectives or purposes that are executed according to Websters dictionary. If this seems too big, you can break it down to wanting to change a habit. There are 2 important factors that you need to see it as a mission: 1. It must be of the utmost importance to you - it is must, it is non negotiable. 2. It is your new normal, you must live intentionally and consciously choosing your mission over comfort. It being your new normal means there is no end point, this is how it is going to be which allows you to be in it for the long haul and have patience but also with a sense of urgency and determination, it is paradoxical.
Further down in verses 16-17 they are warned that he is sending them out like sheep among wolves and that they must be as innocent as doves, but as shrewd as snakes. Another paradox, you must stay on guard and be discerning but be kind. When you are living in integrity and with intention you have do the same things. You will be faced with all kinds of opposition, temptation and questions. People who are on a mission and live intentionally often rub others the wrong way. You may also be changing and interrupting patterns. The majority of people live on autopilot.
There is a temptation when you are on a mission to passionately insist that others live as you live, and do what you do, etc.. Jesus tells them to go announce and do good works, but beyond that it is up to the people to choose to listen and join in or not. He always lets people choose and love them either way. We need to do the same thing, share and move on. He also tells them to expect persecution and to see it as an opportunity. The opportunity is to build endurance and build further strength for yourself and for your mission. This goes back to number 2 - endurance for your new normal and choosing the mission over your personal comfort.
Being on a mission is hard but it is also exhilarating and rewarding, it turns life into an adventure. We see through Jesus and his disciples the impact that people on a mission can have.
