📝 Reflection 

Isaiah 43: 15-19

  I am the Lord, your Holy One, Israels’ Creator and King. I am the Lord, who opened a way through the waters, making a dry path through the sea. I called for the the mighty army of Egypt with all its chariots and horses. I drew them beneath the waves, and they drowned, their lives snuffed out like a smoldering candle wick.

  But forget all that- it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland. 

 

In the recovery world the you will often hear it said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result. We get a hint of this from these passages in Isaiah. The story of the parting of the Red Sea is being recounted here probably with the under standing that the people would always rely on and expect God to show up for them in ways that He had in the past. So they keep operating in the same cycles fueled by the same beliefs. 

God is telling us through Isaiah to expect the unexpected. He is doing something new, don’t you see. Even in the retelling of the story of the parting of the Red Sea, the words that are being used to describe this are ‘making a dry path through the sea…’. Then in the very next passage he says forget all of that, it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. Then the analogy used to describe the new things is the opposite of the previous deliverance. ‘I will create rivers in the dry wasteland’. 

Brilliant the clues are hidden in plain site in the way the words are used. This is how our brain works and the 2 oppositions intelligence systems that ‘war’ for control within.   The Ego or the survival system ‘wants’ us to believe that there is only one way, it is more of fixed, rigid, inflexible intelligence system. It’s job is to survive no matter what. We also have the executive or the learning intelligence system that can see beyond just survival. Often these two systems seem to act in opposition, it is bringing them into alignment that is the new path forward. Not only into alignment but with the executive learning system leading the way. 

As the passages describe, it is like water in a dry wasteland. It does’t make sense. If you want to move into your potential and what God created you for you will have to allow your survival brain to submit and surrender to the executive or learning brain. It will feel like a dry wasteland at first. As we turn to God our source of refreshment and strength he will do a new thing and bring rivers.. it will start to grow new things. 

Your survival brain will resist and it will try to tell you to go back to Egypt into slavery, the land of familiar or it will tell you that the only way out is the way it was done before, like a big miraculous and sudden solution, like the parting of the Red Sea. But it goes on to say, forget what you know a new way is coming, look for it - don’t you see it. We also must learn to ‘see’ with our spiritual eyes. Things to ponder…
