📝 Reflection
Zechariah 4: 1-7
“Then the angel who had been talking with me returned and woke me, as though I had been asleep. “What do you see now?” he asked. I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl of oil on top of it. Around the bowl are seven lamps, each having seven spouts with wicks. And I see two olive trees, one on each side of the bowl.” Then I asked the angel, “What are these, my Lord? What do they mean?” “Don’t you know?” the angel asked. “No, my Lord,” I replied.”
“Then he said to me, “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’” “Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me. Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” (The seven lamps represent the eyes of the Lord that search all around the world.)”
This book was rich with imagery, visions, signs and mystery. Even Zachariah didn’t understand his own visions, he had to have help interpreting and understanding them. But he was open to receiving them. We can learn a lot from this example. We even have clues in the response. “It will become a level plain before him..” “do not despise these small beginnings..” ‘the eyes of the Lord search all around the world”. Even though in this specific vision they are specifically talking about the rebuilding of the temple, we can be encouraged because God doesn’t expect us to have it all figured out or to be impressive with our ‘size’.
We just need to be open, he is searching for open creative minds that can receive his mystery without the need to understand it. Take it to him and he will help you. In the west in particular we can tend toward being more closed off to mystery and think of things as too ‘out there’, ‘woo-woo’, new age, weird, and/or illogical. Even in churches and religion, we like to put God in a box. God created all the boxes, he is outside of space and time.
There is a lot of strange stuff in the Bible, it is ok for you to be open, as long as you are staying in touch with God and seeking his understanding in the mystery and wonder. Not only is it Ok but he is looking for those seeking him with their whole selves with complete openness and surrendered hearts and minds. If you seek understanding from yourself or other people and sources you can easily get off into unsafe territory and confusion. We are easily influenced and led astray and the enemies number one tactic is deceit, he will will use enough of the truth mixed with a lie to make it seem true.
In this day and age we carry around pocket computers that we still refer to as phones for some strange reason. Anyway, we have no problem believing that words instantly appear as messages from other people from miles away, we get annoyed if there is more than a few second delay in video feed, we can look up anything at anytime, order instant groceries and ride - all wirelessly, but feeling energy from others who are a few feet away from us is ‘weird’, or getting intuitive information, reading God’s word and feeling the Holy Spirt is strange for some of us. If you are in this camp, it is likely because you have blocked yourself off.
If you find yourself being one of the skeptics; here are a few tips and ideas to help you get started and to allow yourself to wonder:
- Get still, or get moving, let go of your agenda and your to do list even for a few minutes. Pray and ask God to reveal something to you. Notice if you have a thought of someone and then ‘coincidently’ do you hear from them a few days later.
- Go on a color walk - think of a color before you leave and just try to notice that color on your walk. Go bird watching, spend time in nature, stop and stare at a tree, flower or body of water and really notice it; hear it, feel it and really see it. Sometimes we just need to get present and be here now.
- Read your bible: meditate on a verse, chapter or book. Journal, doodle, sway to some music. We need to get both sides of our brain working and talking to each other. Just start -God wants us to be childlike, he appreciates and is looking for open vessels that will partner with him.
Embrace the ‘weirdness’ of it all, after all we are spinning on a rock through space. “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin”
