📝 Reflection
Judges 21:6-7
The Israelites felt sorry for their brother Benjamin and said, “today on of the tribes of Israel has been cut off. How can we find wives for the few who remain, since we have sworn by the Lord not to give them our daughters in marriage?”
Wrapping up the book of Judges we learn that after the dust settles and the war against Benjamin was over, there were about 600 men who escaped and survived. The Israelites vowed at Mizpah that they would not allow their daughters to marry any of the survivors as a consequence. As they had more time to think about it they had compassion for their brothers and realized that this consequence was too steep because this would mean the tribe of Benjamin could not survive if there were no wives and therefore no heirs.
Notice the words in the scripture above, they made a decision on their own and in their own ‘wisdom’ with what seemed right and then swore by the Lord. They had faith in their decision making system and what it meant to make a vow, right or wrong. They made a vow, so they had to do it. Rather than change course and admit that their vow was not a very smart or a well thought out plan, they had more faith in the system of making vows and holding to their word even if it was a decision and vow made in folly. They got themselves in between a proverbially rock and a hard place. In their great wisdom they decided to wipe out another tribe to provide wives. When that still wasn’t enough, they had to find a loop whole in their system of not giving their daughters as wives. They planned a mass kidnapping of their daughters while they were out dancing at a annual festival. So technically the daughters were not ‘given’ and the crime of kidnapping would be overlooked. 🤦♀️
So they not only made one mistake, but they compounded it by creating new problems and making even a bigger mess of things! And they were actually even pretty smug and satisfied with their problem solving abilities.
And when their fathers and brothers come to us in protest, we will tell them, ‘Please be sympathetic, Let them have your daughters, for we didn’t find wives for all of them when we destroyed Jabesh-gilead. And you are not guilty of breaking the vow since you did not actually give your daughters to them in marriage’”(Judges 21: 22)
This is what can happen to us to when we seek our own wisdom in situations vs a higher guiding principle and value system, aka God. They not only had misplaced faith in their own wisdom and keeping of their word, they were blind and self deceived in their folly. They were actually proud of themselves. See we kept our vow to God. Even though is wasn’t a vow God asked them to make. And Judges closes with the repeated words “In those days Israel had no king: all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
Have you backed yourself into what seemed like a corner by making a pledge or a vow by your own misguided GPS and then realized maybe you should admit that you are wrong, but by golly you said it so you plow ahead and then create bigger problems for yourself? Have you placed too much faith in being a person of ‘your word’ even when you know you might be wrong?
