Jeremiah 10-21

📝 Reflection

 Jeremiah 13: 1-11

This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen loincloth and put it on, but do not wash it.” So I bought the loincloth as the Lord directed me, and I put it on. Then the Lord gave me another message:  “Take the linen loincloth you are wearing, and go to the Euphrates River.[a] Hide it there in a hole in the rocks.” So I went and hid it by the Euphrates as the Lord had instructed me.A long time afterward the Lord said to me, “Go back to the Euphrates and get the loincloth I told you to hide there.” So I went to the Euphrates and dug it out of the hole where I had hidden it. But now it was rotting and falling apart. The loincloth was good for nothing.

Then I received this message from the Lord: “This is what the Lord says: This shows how I will rot away the pride of Judah and Jerusalem. These wicked people refuse to listen to me. They stubbornly follow their own desires and worship other gods. Therefore, they will become like this loincloth—good for nothing!  As a loincloth clings to a man’s waist, so I created Judah and Israel to cling to me, says the Lord. They were to be my people, my pride, my glory—an honor to my name. But they would not listen to me.

What a strange story and analogy! I can’t do any better!! 🤔🤣  Is this what we are like? Do we have gifts and a purpose for what we are made and we live our lives from a position of putting it under a rock or in a hole to rot away?  This reflection may be pretty short and sweet today,  because it speaks for itself!

Are you following your own desires to the point that you are putting the purpose for which you are made in a hole and burying it? Are you maybe even having thought like ‘who me?’, ‘I can’t do that, I am not good enough, important enough or worthy enough?’  Thoughts like this can be prideful in and of themselves. They are still self focused and self absorbed, even if they are packaged in what looks like humility, modesty and kindness.

If God has put a desire and a purpose and a calling in your heart, who are you NOT to fulfill it? Is your desire to be accepted by your fellow people and keep yourself in your comfort zone? Is this more important than God’s purpose for which you were made?  How many of us are allowing this purpose to rot under a rock?  Is thinking less of yourself and thinking this is modesty, the first time that you are hearing it possibly a good ‘cover’ for pridefulness, rather than true modesty?
