Isaiah 40: 28-31
Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
I woke up full of energy this morning, and waking up and reading this chapter was icing on the energy cake! I was able to really plug into love and gratitude yesterday, and these positive emotions are so powerful and energizing. They are also a choice. When you are feeling low on energy, or feeling sadness, depression, anxiety, overwhelm we sometimes forget and it doesn’t feel like a choice. But it is!
God is often referred to as love. If he is the creator, we are his creation and part of his design was to give us the freedom of choice, then this makes sense. We can get so caught up in our daily lives, our responsibilities, our emotions, others emotions and just life circumstances that we can feel like a helpless victim to negative energy draining emotions. So if energy is tied to feelings, how does this work? How can we ‘activate’ or access this energy source by choice?
Isaiah 40 gives us some clues. It is about choosing our focus and our perspective. When we get too caught up in world events, happenings at work, with loved ones, and other ‘problems’ there doesn’t seem to be a lot of goodness or hope in what you are paying attention to, then you have to choose to shift your focus and change your perspective. What you focus on grows and focus fuels feelings. God gave us the free will and choice to choose our focus. This doesn’t mean that by doing this that we are ignoring or minimizing very real things that might be very heavy and difficult. This isn’t about putting on rose colored glasses or putting your head in the sand.
When we choose to focus on gratitude, curiosity, learning, serving others, all forms of love we create cascade of ‘feel good’ energizing chemicals in our brains and bodies. I like to refer to this as taking your daily ‘D.O.S.E.’ - Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin & Endorphins. Isaiah is able to get himself to a grateful, hopeful, loving place because he is choosing to focus on the bigness and glory of God. His place in creation in the proper perspective creates awe, wonder, gratitude, humility, trust, from this he feels loved and held and that he matters even in all of this ‘bigness’.
You can do the same thing. You can take a deep breath and think about the heavens and the earth and how you ‘get’ to breath and have life without having to do anything to ‘earn’ it. We are human ‘be’ings first and foremost. What I am about to say might seem morbid, but it is a realization and a tool that I personally use and it helps me get out of overwhelm and into gratitude. If you or I drop dead tomorrow - guess what - the world would keep spinning, the sun will still rise. Whatever big thing is going on right now that feels like ‘the sky is falling’ would work itself out somehow. At the end of the day we aren’t that ‘special’. We are to some people, and they would be sad and miss us of course, but life goes on…love goes on…
Ok, just in case that depressed you or made you sad. Then take this same thought process and realize that the creator of the universe, thought enough about you to create you, loves you more than you can think or imagine and chose to give you life. You are special to Him and the temporariness of life is part of what makes it so special. Also, take the advice of the dying which is always consistently, something like: “I wish I had taken more time to spend with those I love and showing them how much I loved them, instead of work, titles, things.. in the end all that matters is love”. So why not live from this awareness and plug into the life giving, energizing power of Love.💖
If you aren’t ‘feeling’ the love and the energy get out of your problems and go hug someone, go help someone, go smile at someone, hug your pets, call someone tell them you love them, encourage or compliment a stranger.. do something loving and receive love and notice how your energy shifts.
