Listening is NOT Doing
🎥 Video
Join me on my morning walk as we rise and shine together by walking through the Bible daily and learn a practical applicable coaching nugget from the ultimate life coach - our creator (whatever that means to you). No judgement zone here, all are welcome, we are all on a spiritual journey because we are after all spiritual beings having a human experience.
📝 Reflection
1Samuel 3: 8-9
…Then Eli realized it as the Lord who was calling the boy. So he said to Samuel, “Go and lie down again, and if someone calls again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’” ….
This really hit me between the ears this morning! I have been so guilty of thinking that listening, hearing, learning, taking in information is synonymous with doing! This is not comfortable or easy to admit, but it is so true! I can imagine that this is true with all of us to a certain extent. Reading this story you can definitely tell this is true for Eli!
He knew that the Lord was coming to speak to Samuel and he knew how to teach him to respond. How? Because he had experienced this before! I can imagine that God grew impatient with him. He gave him warning after warning to discipline his sons and Eli listened, but he didn’t DO the disciplining. I can imagine that as a loving father this was really hard for him. He warned his sons and reprimanded them, but he did’t give them any real consequences. But he probably convinced himself that since he was listening to God’s warnings and he wanted to be obedient that maybe this was also true for his sons. He gave the benefit of the doubt so to speak. So he delayed, justified etc…
Discipline and action are not always fun or comfortable. Especially as parents we have to be more concerned about the character of the individuals we are charged with raising, and not get derailed by our own comfort or theirs either in the situations that require action and discipline.
I almost titled todays ‘lesson’ “Delayed Obedience is disobedience”. But I thought you might have rolled on by that one, I know I would!
How can God not follow through on his promise to discipline Eli and his sons? Would he be taken seriously if he didn’t. They were in a very special and privileged position of being his boots on the ground, his direct representatives. Elis’ sons were definitely guilty of bad behavior but Eli himself was just as guilty if not more guilty for allowing it. As adults we need to have a parental relationship with our selves as well. We have to push ourselves to do the hard things that we know are good for us and our loved ones in the long run despite the short term pain or discomfort of doing so. This is real love not the squishy in the moment love that makes us feel good and is self serving and short sighted.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
Is there an area of your life where you are listening to all the right things and you have head knowledge of what it means, but you are convincing yourself that the listening and knowing is doing? What consequences are you having as a result? What can you do starting today?
