Exodus 18:14
'When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?”'
Listening is something I struggle with more often than I care to admit! Ask my family and friends they will tell you🤦♀️. They will also tell you that I have made a tremendous amount of progress in this area as well. Before you can make changes in an area you have to be able to be honest with yourself about the issue. You can’t work on or change what you can’t see or acknowledge fully. As we are all here together for a common reason I am sure you can receive the truth of this.
Anyhoo.. back to listening. I was reading the story of Jethro in the book of Exodus this morning. It was a beautiful example of relationship between 2 people who truly cared about each other, who listened to each other and therefore for trusted each other.
Jethro listened to Moses, he asked questions, he celebrated his victories and when he saw an opportunity to share a point of view that would not only change Moses life but our lives even to this day. Moses listened as well and was teachable. That is the mark of a truly great leader.
Moses didn’t get defensive he was able to listen and then see the truth of what he was doing that was not serving himself well or the community that he was responsible to. Jethro spoke truth in love and Moses was able to listen with honesty. From Jethro’s wise council Moses set up a court system which is still the foundational structure that we use today.
I can remember a critical part of my success to finally being able to make real progress towards changing at an identity level was putting my ego aside and going all in! I had to put what I thought I knew aside, be honest and listen and then do- then I became.
